Honey, you can keep using "~exposure~" all you want, it's not going to make your point for you, especially on the surgeon example. Because my father is a surgeon, and you're right. You don't haggle with surgeons over exposure. Because surgeons don't need exposure in the same way people in the arts do. He often talks about how humbling the speed with which people will put their life in his hands when they need an operation.

And sure, you don't haggle with your waiter. But have you seriously never seen burger places offering BOGO or other coupons on new products? Or restaurants with steep deals and discounts on opening day? Do you think that discount is just to be nice to folks? No. It's to get good word of mouth. You know. ~Exposure~

But that's a sale. That's not the customer deciding you're asking too much and saying, "I want this but refuse to pay the full price." Because often, they'll still come back and pay for that full price. So your point is moot.

When people haggle with artists for exposure, it's not because they legitimately want to give exposure, or the person needs it. They'll often get jobs, and the ones you go to tend to already have plenty of it. They offer exposure because that's how little they think of the artist's time and don't want to pay someone to, and I quote what someone has said, "stand around and take pictures that my grandmother could with her cheap disposable."

You're burger example is something THE DEALER SETS. If a photographer was having a special sale (tweet this and fill out this survey and get 5% or w/e) that would be one thing and totally cool, but haggling with them is pretty rude and disrespectful, and someone telling you that it comes off as rude does not make them a judgey twat, actually
