Homophobes are actually secretly gay.

+1

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
it's nothing more than blaming gay people for their own discrimination.

It's so stupid in so many ways.

To be fair, in some cases it's true, but I agree it is widely overused. We don't want them on our team, come on, guys...

the only time that argument makes any sense is when the homophob says that everyone will be gay so the world will be burned.

Especially when people basically use it as an excuse to trot out the old gay stereotypes - oh, look [homophobe] put some effort into his appearance/has too high-pitched voice/whatever, look how TOTALLY OBVIOUSLY GAY he is!!! But I'm not being homophobic, I'm only mocking him for being homophobic!

No, you're still perpetuating stereotypes, and making fun of those gay people who do fit some of the stereotypes. :/

Yup. As someone whose parents are extremely homophobic, it downplays the affect homophobia actually has and excuses it.

Yeah, I hate this. And aside from all the reasons everyone else pointed out, I just feel like...even when it is true, it isn't funny, it's just sad. Like they've gotta be really self-hating if they're homophobic and closeted gay, it just makes me sad for them.

(disclaimer: I'm gay)

I hate this argument too, and I'll expand by saying I think there's a major difference between being gay (sexually attracted to the same sex) and having a fetish for gay sex, which the majority of the "secretly gay" homophobes would fall under. I think there are probably a handful of actual self-hating gay bigots out there, but a whole LOT of straight men with a gay sex fetish, in the same way many people get off on "extreme" or degrading porn. They attack the attraction to gay sex because its taboo nature is part of the appeal of extreme porn fetishes, and with mainstream gay acceptance, it would lose its sexual thrill for them. I don't think many bigots actually want to be in a same sex relationship, they're just turned on by the "wrongness" of gay sex.

I hope that makes sense...
