Re: Arguments or criticisms you hate

I don't like the argument that you can't pick and choose what to follow from Leviticus, because it's typically phrased as if the arguer has never heard any of the justifications for why you should pick and choose from Leviticus. I think all that stuff about the three kinds of laws in Leviticus is bullshit, but you need to at least respond to it if you want to convince someone who doesn't already agree with you.

Also, I hate most forms of the argument "You shouldn't care what I do to my kids! They're not yours!" The one that pisses me off the most is the anti-vaxxer formulation, since you can always tell they've never heard of herd immunity.

In general, I also hate the idea that you can't "pick and choose" your religion. I mean, it's your religion, you should believe only what you want to believe and nothing more. Of course, you should acknowledge that you are picking and choosing, and if that makes some of your religious arguments hypocritical, that's something, too.

But hey, I'd rather everyone only "picked" the nice, loving, happy stuff from the Bible or Koran or whatever, and did away with the crazy violent stuff.

Off topic, but . . .

This is something I've complained about in relationship to pagans--people who get into the harshest and "darkest" strains of paganism, then think they're the only real pagans and others are just "fluffy bunnies." Unless you've got a time machine, you only have so much information about what pagan religions were like before Christianity shat all over them. Why not err in thr direction of not being an asshole?

Oh man, I actually am working on my PhD in history and basically looking at pagan religions of northern Europe. And I can guarantee, we know NEXT TO NOTHING about most European brands of paganism. I'm 100% supportive of New Age pagans, pagans who are inspired by older deities, and earth religion. But you are a liar if you claim that your religion is authentic to how people practiced paganism 2000 years ago. The thing about most European pagans is, they didn't write anything down. Christian missionaries and such wrote only a tiny, tiny bit about these religions, and were mostly biased, so there's that, too. That and what's left of archaeological record, we are only vaguely piecing together religious cults and customs that are sadly lost.

So smug "I'm-more-pagan-than-you" New Age pagans are seriously so deluded and misinformed.

"Why not err in thr direction of not being an asshole?"

Because they're assholes by nature and they're using their religion as an excuse to not work on their huge personal flaws. These exist in EVERY religion.

That sounds like Thelemites I used to know who loved putting down Wiccans or people who just dabbled in Witchcraft.
