'sky fairy' and its variants. thank you for contributing absolutely nothing of value to a conversation on religion, jackass. if that's all they have to say, might as well shut up and go back to their bridge.

And I'd add any argument against "religion" that in actuality only makes sense as an argument against Christianity specifically (or less frequently, Christianity + the Abrahamic religions).

(same anon)

Meant to say Christianity + the rest of the Abrahamic religions. D'oh.

ayrt
yeah, those ex-Christian atheists with a cross-shaped chip on their shoulder and very little understanding of theology or other religions are so painfully transparent. and obnoxious.

Most of those don't bother me. What gets to me is language about an old man in the sky. I've never been able to figure out what makes that one different. I mean the god I believe in has no gender, but my god is also not a fairy so it can't just be inaccuracy that gets me.

Possibly related?

My impression when people talk about a "sky fairy" is that

a): they're referring to the god of the gaps https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_the_gaps

b): they don't get that it's possible for someone to believe in a god that isn't a god of the gaps.

I can see how that's insulting. But when it's actually used in an argument, I think the idea is to equate belief in god with other supernatural beliefs. Which is only logical in particular arguments (like, if you can't "prove" it's not there, you should at least be skeptical about it!), but useless against someone who simply believes in a god because they are following a religious text that tells them to believe in that, and not fairies.

then state your argument, instead of shrieking SKY FAIRYYYYYY

But that sounds more like you just object to having religion insulted. I'm not interesting in "insulting" religion, but I'm also not interested in "not insulting" religion. Sky Fairy is overused and stupid, but if one were making an argument and basically said "religion is essentially belief in an all powerful sky fairy" I think that's pretty legitimate.

Sky Fairy is overused and stupid
yes that's what I said so what the fuck are you arguing about?

Did you read the second half of that sentence?

Your original post wasn't really an "argument" that you don't like at all, it was just an insult. I don't like a lot of insults. That's not really a discussion point. I gave the argument in which someone might use a "sky fairy" metaphor, which would be more legitimate.

Yep. I too have my own criticisms of religion and the concept of God (or gods) and whatnot, but I'm not going to take someone seriously who speaks in mocking tones like that about someone's beliefs. You want to argue about religion and God and that stuff? Bring proper arguments. There's plenty of 'em out there. Silly name-calling and mockery just cheapens the debate.
