One more I forgot

Whenever someone dies during a dangerous religious ritual, the others always shrug it off because God could just as easily "call them home" while they're crossing the street and a truck barrels through. It seems like the assumption is that you'll die exactly when God wants you to die, which makes me worry what they think of terminally ill folks. "Sorry, Billy, but you'll never reach adulthood because God wants you to die young!"

What if Billy's cool with that?

If Billy is a 5 year old he most likely does not yet have the mental capacity to fully understand what it means to die at his age.

I'd be worried if a 5 year old was cool with dying.

That's why they justify it with religion. You're not DYING, Billy, you're just going to meet God! That's a good thing!

I agree that that's stupid, but I am very worried now, are "dangerous religious rituals" like, a regular thing in the developed world?

I'm most familiar with the snake-handling Pentecostalists, who're kind of obscure but still make the news sometimes. I hear other religions have their own variants, like Muslims who get way too hardcore about Ramadan.

Not very, no. I suspect the more common cause of death amongst seriously religious people of a certain stripe is refusal of modern medical services in favour of the healing powers of prayer.

Along those lines, I hate "God called him home :) :) :)" after a long, excruciating illness. That's great and all, he's not in pain anymore, but why did God want him to suffer so long first?
