I don't get the entitlement stereotype associated with millennials onward. The stuff about kids getting participation trophies? Has anyone ever experienced that? Not me, or anyone else I knew growing up, got showered in trophies and tons of fake praise, but I grew up in poor, rural areas. And I can't help that think that even if it happened, kids would be smart enough to recognize that they're being given meaningless "rewards" and grow cynical instead of entitled. idk. Thoughts?

We got trophies for sports teams and stuff when I was growing up, even if we were shit. But, yeah, we knew they were meaningless. At least I did. It was quite obvious. & as for praise - I mean, it's hard to say, because there was a certain amount of pro forma stuff. You know, good effort, good try, yadda yadda. But I certainly wouldn't describe it as being showered with praise. Really what I would say is, if you think a parent can't make their approval or disapproval, pride or lack thereof, clear using whatever means are available to them, they're naive.

Everyone in my brother's class got some kind of trophy, and yes, I think most knew which were the "real" trophies and which weren't. But everyone always went home with something.

While I haven't experienced that myself, I feel like that more's a critique for the generation born in the 2000s.

If it's not, then I'm thinking it's more of a particular experience delegated to a particular racial/social/economic circle.

As what is considered a minority growing up in the inner city--and I went to private school because the public schools in my area were utter shit--nobody gave me a trophy for just showing up or participating. There were no trophies, lol.
