We got trophies for sports teams and stuff when I was growing up, even if we were shit. But, yeah, we knew they were meaningless. At least I did. It was quite obvious. & as for praise - I mean, it's hard to say, because there was a certain amount of pro forma stuff. You know, good effort, good try, yadda yadda. But I certainly wouldn't describe it as being showered with praise. Really what I would say is, if you think a parent can't make their approval or disapproval, pride or lack thereof, clear using whatever means are available to them, they're naive.
