The worst episode of the X-Files I have seen so far is The Rain King. Ugh.

Really? I didn't mind The Rain King. I mean, it was corny, but there are worse sins for late-era X-Files.

Ah, I have gotten to the terrible seasons! But so far, I could not stand how borrrriiingggg that episode was. The only good part was the cow.

I was sort of okay with the Romano ER episode at the time, although as years roll on I get kind of pissed that he was finally humanizing and being an interesting character and they offed him like that. His best moment was telling oh god I can't remember her name, River Song, I guess, whatever, to go be with Anthony Edwards on Hawaii in his last days.

Elizabeth Corday, and I had to think to remember it as well.

I think the one that really bugged me is the one where, um, Tom Sawyer guy Ray Barnett tells Neela he lost his legs or something? In person? That was just mean. (And maybe I stopped watching then, because I totally don't remember the episode the wiki mentions (http://er.wikia.com/wiki/Ray_Barnett) where he shows up after that, and is in better spirits.)

But there were a lot of those episodes.

The Rain King was odd, like a writer that had only a brief description of the X-Files had written it. I don't mind it very much, but it doesn't fit with the overall flavor of the series.

Honestly, I loathe pretty much any episode with Reyes, who I found completely obnoxious. (Doggett was bearable, mostly.) I checked out of the last couple seasons.

But the thing about X-Files is that "the overall flavor of the series" is pretty open to interpretation. "Rain King" doesn't stand out any more than say, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space", or "Humbug", "Bad Blood" or "The Post-Modern Prometheus". Some of fandom's favorite episodes were written to be standalones from the mythology arc.

Yeah, that episode still sticks in my mind as a really mean episode. I didn't buy it as irony or fate, it just seemed like the writers were being assholes, so it kind of pulled me out of the show and left a bad taste in my mouth.

The episode where he lost his arm was great, and I thought the character had shown a lot of growth, and then he eventually gets squished by a helicopter. I still don't get why they did that.

Ah, too bad. I always thought Rain King was pretty funny and underrated as a late series episode.
