LJ/DW Comms you miss

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Either because they're inactive or for other reasons.

I kind of miss both bad_service and customers_suck. They were both really good and active comms - so much so I actually had to stop following because my flist would get clogged! But they got really wanky for a while, to the point at which you'd get made fun of for saying one slightly off thing. They're better now, probably likely because the trolls moved on to reddit and tumblr where they fit right on, but they're also way less active.

(I mean, both always had issues anyway - a lot of customers_suck posts read more like "I hate my job and I can't believe I have to do it." But most of them really weren't like that.)

Especially crack_van. Nothing will ever fill the void it left. :(

I miss ship manifesto so much. There have been some half-hearted attempts to restart on Tumblr, but none of them have taken off. And i really want to do manifestos for my current ships.

I modded a dressing room roleplay community for a while and had heaps of fun with it for the first six months or so. The whole thing basically went south because the leadership responsibilities didn't sit well with my then mental health issues. Some stuff happened and there was a lot of fallout from it and I know I upset a bunch of people with some bad decisions.

I eventually handed the whole community over to the other mods and stopped playing completely. I haven't checked back to see what happened in literally years. When I think how much fun I had and some of the great friends I briefly had, I feel really sad and I'm pretty ashamed at how I handled the whole thing.

What's a dressing room RPG?

And don't feel bad; you had good reasons. (Although this actually sounds very familiar - was it a Harry Potter RPG, by any chance? If this is what I vaguely remember, I wouldn't feel bad about it. Honest.)

Basically a roleplay community where there's no application forms, no quality control and you can have duplicates of a character (I think we had FOUR of a particular character). The one I ran had very much an 'anything goes' kind of style in terms of content, so people were playing whatever storylines they liked, with whatever characters they liked.

No, it wasn't a Harry Potter one. I don't feel bad about it all the time, just when I remember it.

Okay so it's a journalfen com but

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss fandomwank. It was great to keep up with all the things going on in fandom, and some of the wankas had a great sense of humor. The edits and jokes they'd came up with always made me laugh.

Same here. Good times, good times.

I think HP fandom ending really bruised FW, since that was 87% of their material.

I was never into FS per se, but I was in some of those circles, and I think wanking about things just got... old after a while. I used to be obsessed with the evulness of Cassie Claire*; now I just don't care. At all.

*I was indirectly involved with bad_penny, even.

Thank you for your contribution to fandom history! Those were the good old days, my friend!

The capslock comms. Their time has passed, but they were fun while they lasted.

Yeaa, I didn't spend a lot of time there, but the Star Trek capslock comm was amusing.

Even more than those I miss active kink memes.

Ugh. I joined the Capslock House community back when I was really into House. They had such clear House/Cameron shipping preferences, though, even though it wasn't anywhere in the rules or profile, and tended to jump on anyone who disagreed. It rather soured me to capslock communities in general.

Does anyone here remember deadmentalking? I was mostly a lurker, never very good at it, but the serious players in it were amazingly hilarious.

Also, my sister became good LJ friends with someone from there. LJ friend moved to this neck of the woods and they met up. Then it dawns on my sister that LJ friend and grad school friend of hers would get along great. So she sets them up. AND NOW THEY'RE MARRIED. :D

I used to lurk a lot of panfandom RPGs. I'm too shy and too on the completely wrong timezone to actually participate, but I liked following other players. But it seems to be a dying trend. Oh well.

Metafandom was my favorite. I liked the long essays that people would post regarding specific fandom episodes or fandom tropes. It was like a collection of intriguing pan-fandom articles. It was a good way to find interesting posters in my own fandoms, and it was also good to sort of take the pulse of fandom as a whole, since you'd see what was going on in other fandoms.

Re: LJ/DW Comms you miss

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the long essays, but it was frustrating for me because I was only really in one fandom, and so often my flist would be cluttered with stuff I had no interest in. :/ (This was back when comms like that would have 200 posts a day.)

Re: LJ/DW Comms you miss

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I always visited the site directly, instead of via the Friends page. I think I was only in one relatively large fandom at the time, but I've always been interested in fandom as a whole, so I liked to skim over the topics.

But yes, if you were just reading it on your Friends page, it was probably an avalanche of postings.

glam_lolz and its related communities. i've managed to accidentally end up as mutuals on tumblr with some of the people from back then, though, so that's nice. i only ever lurked so its cool to be buddies with them now, even if its not the same.
