As someone who is really into linguistics, I can't understand why people find certain words offensive. I know there are some really obvious words that are used to offend, but the innocuous words that have different meanings and are not always charged.

I feel like the people who allow themselves to be offended over a word like 'lame' are just looking for any reason to be offended. This isn't Victorian times. People using it are obviously not talking about someone who is disabled, they are using it with the intention of conveying 'boring' such as, "This party is lame".

Then there is the use of 'dumb' that gets people offended. It's mostly used as a pretty tame insult about someone behaving immature to dismiss something. I almost never hear it used in everyday life talking about a deaf person.

The important thing is to pay attention to context. Language evolves and words take on different meanings and degrees of intensity depending on the way they are used. People who get offended at one word are only offended because of the word itself more than the way it was used.
