But yeah, I think the whole SJW thing was also becoming prevalent on LJ. Communities with decent mods were able to shut that down though; on tumblr it's a free for all.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)But it was so damn toxic and "SJW" (especially by the end)... which made it all the more ridiculously hypocritical. The very premise of the damn community was generally bullying, by pointing out stupid fics and such. And then the asshole mod encouraged that kind of atmosphere that'd dogpile someone for saying "lame".
So glad I got out of that, but really regret that I participated for so long. Fuck communities based on bullying, and fuck communities that encourage dogpiling and SJW circle-wanks.

My dashboard is surprisingly free of SJW hate as well, considering I follow two blogs that upset....uh, the anti-SJW? Do they have a name?
Even their hate seems pretty minimal to old LJ and DA days.
I think it's more the SJW show up on the big name dramas that get spread around a lot. i.e. Zami, horrible and sad but I would not be surprised if a similar situation has played out with a relative unknown that no-one has noticed :/

Nowadays I'm more likely to raise an eyebrow at people that are too quick to twist their panties taking every chance label anything they might dislike as "tumblr sjw bs".

Generally though, people on tumblr remind me a lot of them. The only difference is the FFR was, like, an enclosed space where they could all congregate and be an intense concentration of hate. Tumblr is a bit more spread out.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)FFR wasn't always like that and more importantly, the amount of harassment wasn't even comparable to what it's common on tumblr.

But I think the reason people complain about tumblr is that tumblr is now basically Fandom Central; it's hard to participate in fandom meaningfully without using it. FFR was easy to avoid.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)On the upside, it became a shortcut for learning who to not engage with on other cimms, because many of the worst offenders were all over the place attempting to inflict the same bad behavior. All those people are mostly gone now, but the all but killed FFR before they got on their brooms and bailed.

Of course some people consider me a SJW. Largely because I will defend people who are bothered by "lame". I don't need everyone to think it's a terrible slur, I just really hate when people claim that no one who is actually disabled cares about it when that's just not true. It's complaining about people trying to speak for people with disabilities while doing exactly that yourself. You can think the people who don't like the word are wrong but don't act like they're not there for the sake of simplifying things.

Depending on the mood of the hivemind over there an author could get people to agree with him/her shitting all over someone else even if whatever they were ranting about wasn't actually all that bad.
(Aside: Does anyone remember the rant that actually complained about "A Year Like None Other"? I want to find it again.)
In general...
(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)However, it seems to me that it was less about trolling and more honest-to-goodness activism. My fandom held fundraisers when natural disasters occurred. We raised money for literacy. Yes, you sometimes got people being over the top - I did and said some stupid, stupid things. But I always felt like the spirit was more well-meant, I guess? We sometimes got into arguments, but it was never to the levels it gets to on tumblr, with a few exceptions.
I think if anything, that's where tumblr got it from, except they took it all those extra levels when things already tended to go too far.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)Whenever these 'uhm, 'scuse me, LJ was just as bad..' secrets and sentiments pop up, it invariably involves pointing out single communities known for Tumblr-esque drama. There is so much overlap in Tumblr and the reblog system combined with the note system give more weight to controversial, mean and ignorant bullshit. Defend your good experiences on Tumblr, I encourage it. Maybe try and bring it back 'round to the Tumblr of lore, but come ON stop gesticulating wildly at a pretty much dead journal-ing community as defense. I'm of the older fan variety. I used LJ, and I used it heavily. Personal blogs, roleplay, communities. NOTHING I SAW ever held a candle to what Tumblr has become and it's just bonkers that anyone thinks otherwise.

It mixes people's personal blog/space with the wide public.
A personal post that was worded in a certain context (for example knowing that Op was disabled themselves, or had a bad day), or worded carelessly because it was meant to be shared among a circle of a few followers can get easily blown out of proportion. Now you can't even avoid tagging your posts to keep them from turning up in tags.
Snappy and funny replies to missteps/misinformation/bad behavior get reblogged, possibly still circulating years later, while the OP's reply has no way to reach the same kind of audience. Whoever gets the most reblogs and attention basically gets the last word.
On lj or dw any following answer is right there in the thread. People are able to apologize, or explain themselves. Meanwhile tumblr posts that include corrections just don’t get spread as much.
Maybe the wank itself isn't any worse, but people are way more afraid of doing something wrong.

FFR was absolutely awful in its later days. As was... sf-drama I believe? Definitely worse than tumblr, probably because it was all condensed into one small space.
