I've seen people catch flak for using 'crazy' and 'stupid' on tumblr.

But yeah, I think the whole SJW thing was also becoming prevalent on LJ. Communities with decent mods were able to shut that down though; on tumblr it's a free for all.

I agree. I am embarrassed to say I followed fanficrants for a few years, mainly because it was so popular back in the LJ days. I even posted a few times, though they were generic trope complaints rather than specific fic/author criticisms.

But it was so damn toxic and "SJW" (especially by the end)... which made it all the more ridiculously hypocritical. The very premise of the damn community was generally bullying, by pointing out stupid fics and such. And then the asshole mod encouraged that kind of atmosphere that'd dogpile someone for saying "lame".

So glad I got out of that, but really regret that I participated for so long. Fuck communities based on bullying, and fuck communities that encourage dogpiling and SJW circle-wanks.

The thing about tumblr is it is such a big userbase, most people can fly under the SJW radar. I think I've had one anon hate? Well, lol, it wasn't even anon and I have anon enabled most of the time. I get more bot spam than random SJW hate.

My dashboard is surprisingly free of SJW hate as well, considering I follow two blogs that upset....uh, the anti-SJW? Do they have a name?

Even their hate seems pretty minimal to old LJ and DA days.

I think it's more the SJW show up on the big name dramas that get spread around a lot. i.e. Zami, horrible and sad but I would not be surprised if a similar situation has played out with a relative unknown that no-one has noticed :/

You can get flak for that stuff on tumblr too, occasionally. It just proves your point though, this stuff can happen anywhere and singling it out as a "tumblr sjw" strawman is ridiculous. The stronger reaction probably comes from Tumblr towering over the internet in general in a way LJ and DeviantArt never did, but it's really more of the same, if only on a bigger scale.

Nowadays I'm more likely to raise an eyebrow at people that are too quick to twist their panties taking every chance label anything they might dislike as "tumblr sjw bs".

I remember that place! They were fucking nuts!

Generally though, people on tumblr remind me a lot of them. The only difference is the FFR was, like, an enclosed space where they could all congregate and be an intense concentration of hate. Tumblr is a bit more spread out.

Nah, FFR probably wasn't always like that. The "tumblr SJW" culture was already emerging the last two years of LJ's heyday - look at sf_drama or ontd_feminism entries from 2011-ish if you want proof. I think it was that attitude that bled over into FFR, because I def. remember being surprised at seeing it there when I went back after not having visited for maybe a year or so.

I caught glimpses of extreme SJW stuff on Lj before everyone moved over to tumblr but because how everything was community-based on Lj it was easier to avoid. But tumblr being how it is means that SJW stuff gets circled around much easier so it seems like it's everywhere(when honestly I've stumbled across about an equal amount of extreme SJW's, anti-SJ's and actual neo-nazi's).

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-11-08 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, FFR was awful.

But I think the reason people complain about tumblr is that tumblr is now basically Fandom Central; it's hard to participate in fandom meaningfully without using it. FFR was easy to avoid.

FFR was one of the first big places on LJ where the SJW culture gelled. It started out as a fairly snarkery and reasonably entertaining comm and then there was this ... shift. Pretty soon the second people phrased a sentence wrong it or criticized a story for the wrong reason, it turned into a shining example of the two minute hate.

On the upside, it became a shortcut for learning who to not engage with on other cimms, because many of the worst offenders were all over the place attempting to inflict the same bad behavior. All those people are mostly gone now, but the all but killed FFR before they got on their brooms and bailed.
sarillia: (Default)

[personal profile] sarillia 2015-11-08 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
People exaggerate a lot about FFR. There were some bad trainwrecks but they weren't nearly as common as people say. Most posts were the same complaints about fanfic again and again with some fandom discussion thrown in when a few people got on the subject of a fandom they shared. I was there during my fundie days when I was in denial and claimed homosexuality was a sin and somehow I never got dogpiled.

Of course some people consider me a SJW. Largely because I will defend people who are bothered by "lame". I don't need everyone to think it's a terrible slur, I just really hate when people claim that no one who is actually disabled cares about it when that's just not true. It's complaining about people trying to speak for people with disabilities while doing exactly that yourself. You can think the people who don't like the word are wrong but don't act like they're not there for the sake of simplifying things.

Oh god, I remember that damn comm. I haven't looked in on it in years.

Depending on the mood of the hivemind over there an author could get people to agree with him/her shitting all over someone else even if whatever they were ranting about wasn't actually all that bad.

(Aside: Does anyone remember the rant that actually complained about "A Year Like None Other"? I want to find it again.)

In general...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who remembers the slight SJWdom of LJ in general - not just the comms, but individual accounts? In fact, I qualified.

However, it seems to me that it was less about trolling and more honest-to-goodness activism. My fandom held fundraisers when natural disasters occurred. We raised money for literacy. Yes, you sometimes got people being over the top - I did and said some stupid, stupid things. But I always felt like the spirit was more well-meant, I guess? We sometimes got into arguments, but it was never to the levels it gets to on tumblr, with a few exceptions.

I think if anything, that's where tumblr got it from, except they took it all those extra levels when things already tended to go too far.

The reason Tumblr's worse is because the platform makes it easier to find and harass people. On LJ, you really had to go looking for places like FFR, and it was easy enough to leave. On Tumblr, it's much easier for the SJWs to find and target anyone they want because it's so decentralized, and the only way to stop the abuse is to delete your account.

I saw some of that but probably missed the worst of it, thankfully. What made me leave was how repetitive it was. Like the same four people searching high and low for things to be angry or nitpicky about, and nine times out of ten, it was the most obvious stuff you could imagine. This wall of misspelled text by someone on ffnet who's probably 12 is in no way professionally written and doesn't reflect a mature understanding of canon or the world in general, you guys! Snore. It was funny sometimes. My favorites were the highly sophisticated and mysterious 19-year-olds who lost their virginity over the weekend and dropped by to tell everyone how totally bogus every last fic writer's sex scenes were, refusing to give examples or elaborate in any way as a handful of people spiralled into self-doubt and begged the enlightened one to look over their stories. This happened at least twice while I was there.

I'm consistently baffled by secrets like this. Okay, yes. Tumblr is the predominant internet hang for most everyone fandom-wise. It's a huge deal. It's also a huge garbage pit. It's much bigger than LJ ever was or could have been, not just in membership but in the sheer scope of it. AND even if LJ was just as multi-faceted and ginormous and time consuming as Tumblr, it doesn't matter. Because Tumblr is huge and full of truly awful stupid people. I have a very very very VERY high tolerance for internet bullshit, but it became impossible to avoid the shit bubbling over into my everyday tumbling. I quit. I check in every so often. And somehow it got worse.

Whenever these 'uhm, 'scuse me, LJ was just as bad..' secrets and sentiments pop up, it invariably involves pointing out single communities known for Tumblr-esque drama. There is so much overlap in Tumblr and the reblog system combined with the note system give more weight to controversial, mean and ignorant bullshit. Defend your good experiences on Tumblr, I encourage it. Maybe try and bring it back 'round to the Tumblr of lore, but come ON stop gesticulating wildly at a pretty much dead journal-ing community as defense. I'm of the older fan variety. I used LJ, and I used it heavily. Personal blogs, roleplay, communities. NOTHING I SAW ever held a candle to what Tumblr has become and it's just bonkers that anyone thinks otherwise.

I only lurked on LJ, but I think the reblog function just makes tumblr worse.
It mixes people's personal blog/space with the wide public.

A personal post that was worded in a certain context (for example knowing that Op was disabled themselves, or had a bad day), or worded carelessly because it was meant to be shared among a circle of a few followers can get easily blown out of proportion. Now you can't even avoid tagging your posts to keep them from turning up in tags.

Snappy and funny replies to missteps/misinformation/bad behavior get reblogged, possibly still circulating years later, while the OP's reply has no way to reach the same kind of audience. Whoever gets the most reblogs and attention basically gets the last word.
On lj or dw any following answer is right there in the thread. People are able to apologize, or explain themselves. Meanwhile tumblr posts that include corrections just don’t get spread as much.

Maybe the wank itself isn't any worse, but people are way more afraid of doing something wrong.

Hahaha. Word. Still banned there. Man, I remember when it was actually a place to go where you could reasonably... well. Rant. About fanfics. Weird.

Oh, FFR. I remember having some of my fics/my author name in general on there and I could only laugh a lot at the commentary. Even the people replying were like "wtf, dude, calm down". It's been yeaaaars and I forgot all about it until just now.

I've seen people catch flack for using those words, but I have a fair amount of followers and no one has ever bugged me about it.

FFR was absolutely awful in its later days. As was... sf-drama I believe? Definitely worse than tumblr, probably because it was all condensed into one small space.
rbhudson: (Default)

[personal profile] rbhudson 2015-11-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
But why do you need to use those words? Why are they so important to you that you don't give a shit about how it effects other people? Seriously, get over it. It's 2015, there are just certain things you shouldn't say anymore.
