But this is pure anecdata on your part. See, I'm also an older fan (dating back to the good ol' days of webrings and forums), and I saw way more awful shit on LJ than I have on tumblr.

On LJ you had communities like FFrants, booju, and sf_drama and the like. Communities that either started out as really toxic circlejerks, or eventually devolved into that. In the ten-ish years I was active on LJ, I had fifteen different friends get stalked irl, bullied into suicide attempts, had people try to get them fired, etc. because of how fucking horrible and toxic LJ-based fandom could be. In five years on tumblr, that's happened to none of my friends.

I think it's really easy to say 'but those were just isolated incidents, LJ fandom isn't like tumblr fandom!' But LJ fandom was JUST LIKE tumblr fandom is. Mostly great with a handful of assholes trolling for people that they can hurt and patting each other on the backs for being More Enlightened Than You. They're both fucking terrible, because fandom has always been extremely toxic and has always enabled really awful behavior, especially in younger fans.

I go way back on tumblr, and I gotta say I heavily disagree with you. Yes, there were a few pockets of wank, but even then it didn't follow you home nine times out of ten.

I was in some of the wankiest fandoms known to man. Hetalia, Naruto, Bleach, I did all them. And you know what? I never had any of that wank follow me home. I never felt unsafe to speak in my own space, and I never saw the kind of dragging and call outs for stuff which frankly is mostly harmless that I see on a daily basis.

There was shipping wank and toxic communities, but it was often quite easy to avoid. Most people didn't go straight into shipping communities and start bashing and attacking like they do in tags, for example.
