(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)Whenever these 'uhm, 'scuse me, LJ was just as bad..' secrets and sentiments pop up, it invariably involves pointing out single communities known for Tumblr-esque drama. There is so much overlap in Tumblr and the reblog system combined with the note system give more weight to controversial, mean and ignorant bullshit. Defend your good experiences on Tumblr, I encourage it. Maybe try and bring it back 'round to the Tumblr of lore, but come ON stop gesticulating wildly at a pretty much dead journal-ing community as defense. I'm of the older fan variety. I used LJ, and I used it heavily. Personal blogs, roleplay, communities. NOTHING I SAW ever held a candle to what Tumblr has become and it's just bonkers that anyone thinks otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 05:28 am (UTC)(link)Tumblr has no privacy at all. Fandom shares the tags and there is no designated safe and private space for anyone. Anyone can create an account and follow you without needing your approval. Anyone can post drama starting post in the shared fandom tags. Anyone can reblog a persons post and add onto it trying to start drama. Anon hate is always prevalent.
I don't doubt there was some bad stuff going on with LJ, but at least it was contained to certain communities that you could avoid and you could set your blog to friends only.
The only way to be safe on tumblr is to turn off anon asks and never venture past your dashboard where you have carefully selected to follow blogs that won't get involved in fandom drama. Also never make a post using fandom tags. If you use a keyword in your post be sure to separate the words like t////hi.s.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 06:22 am (UTC)(link)On LJ you had communities like FFrants, booju, and sf_drama and the like. Communities that either started out as really toxic circlejerks, or eventually devolved into that. In the ten-ish years I was active on LJ, I had fifteen different friends get stalked irl, bullied into suicide attempts, had people try to get them fired, etc. because of how fucking horrible and toxic LJ-based fandom could be. In five years on tumblr, that's happened to none of my friends.
I think it's really easy to say 'but those were just isolated incidents, LJ fandom isn't like tumblr fandom!' But LJ fandom was JUST LIKE tumblr fandom is. Mostly great with a handful of assholes trolling for people that they can hurt and patting each other on the backs for being More Enlightened Than You. They're both fucking terrible, because fandom has always been extremely toxic and has always enabled really awful behavior, especially in younger fans.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 07:02 am (UTC)(link)I was in some of the wankiest fandoms known to man. Hetalia, Naruto, Bleach, I did all them. And you know what? I never had any of that wank follow me home. I never felt unsafe to speak in my own space, and I never saw the kind of dragging and call outs for stuff which frankly is mostly harmless that I see on a daily basis.
There was shipping wank and toxic communities, but it was often quite easy to avoid. Most people didn't go straight into shipping communities and start bashing and attacking like they do in tags, for example.
