But why do you need to use those words? Why are they so important to you that you don't give a shit about how it effects other people? Seriously, get over it. It's 2015, there are just certain things you shouldn't say anymore.

It's 2015, there are just certain things you shouldn't say anymore.

Or you could realize that sometimes you're just not going to like the things other people say, the way they say it, or the words they use, instead of just going "Hmm learning to tolerate stuff I don't like is too hard, people just shouldn't say things I don't like!"

Accepting that assholes will continue to exist doesn't have to be the same as excusing them for being assholes. Some words should not be used by anyone who wants to be considered a decent person, and if you want others to ignore your words, they may find it simpler to ignore your existence.

Words like "lame," "stupid," and "crazy" are fairly benign and pretty ingrained into every day speech. It's not like the OP wants to be able to say horrible slurs.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
You could say the same about any words we now find extremely dated and offensive.

I still have a great-grandmother who calls black people 'coloreds'.

I don't consider people assholes simply because they have a different linguistic policy than me. I don't consider judgmental people that jump to quick conclusions on little basis to be exhibiting superior behavior over someone who uses the word "stupid".

they may find it simpler to ignore your existence.

Golly, what a tragedy.

Wait, we're still on "stupid"? I thought this had turned into one of those threads where folks defend their right to call other people the N-word. I'm sorry I overreacted.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I mean using the word "asshole" will alienate you from certain people.

I think it's less "some words should not be used by anyone who wants to be a decent person" but more read the mood of a conversation and be aware that there's certain words that might offend people.

For the most part language policing isn't effective, especially with word ingrained in everyday speech. People usually end up saying them anyway, just not around people who'll be offended. And even if it were, the point of slurs is to be offensive, so people would come up with equally nasty alternatives.

Asshole? Really?

...that's on Tumblr somewhere, isn't it? -.-;

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
You're telling me you don't use "stupid" or "crazy" in every day speech? lmao okay

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2015-11-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's 2015, there are just certain things you shouldn't say anymore.

Because they meant something totally different a couple centuries ago? Really?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because they are useful words. I'm not going to stop using words that effectively communicate my thoughts or feelings because some dweeb on the internet is a fragile little snowflake, especially since most of them have vocabularies that would make sailors blush.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I mean, sometimes I just have to express how terrible something is by calling it gay! It's just the word to use! And retarded! You wouldn't call a retard retarded; you call your friends retarded when they're acting retarded, right??

High five, bro!!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Dude, I'm gay as hell and I call things gay all the time. Not everyone's as delicate as you are.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I imagine you're being sarcastic but honestly? Yeah, that's pretty much how it works.

Never being able to use what are regarded by some as slurs in any context is pointless and counterproductive. Words in the English language are capable of bearing more than one meaning, and the meaning of words changes all the time. Like, surely it's a good thing if people start using these words in other contexts rather than using them as slurs? That way you're taking power away from those words and reducing their ability to hurt people.

In time, retarded will probably be on the same level as 'lame' or 'stupid', in that it's only offensive to people who are actively trying to be offended (in fact it pretty much already is where I live). Why do you want to get in the way of that? Why do you want those words to continue being powerful and hurtful?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like this speshul snowflake got triggered.

How do you people live in the real world? Do you just stay in your rooms in a safe little bubble all day getting offended over the internet? Do you honestly think you can stop people from using words that trigger you? How do you watch movies or read books without foaming at the mouth?

Do you ever actually approach people in your life who use words that offend your delicate feelings? Do you think your protest against words being used in way that you don't like makes a damn difference in the world? Do you think everyone is going to stop using words because a little minority on the internet BAWWWWWWWWWWS like a fussy baby about it?

Wake up and face reality.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
"gay" and "retarded" are both words that were and are applied to groups within the last 10 years, "lame," "dumb," and "stupid" are so divorced from their original contexts that to compare the two is ridiculous. when you say something is "gay," it's understood that something is bad because gay is bad. when you say something is "lame," it's understood that it's bad, not because being unable to walk is bad, but because the word lame has developed its own definition and has for decades. almost no one uses "dumb" as a synonym for "mute" anymore, so the original association isn't even there. "gay" and "retarded" have no such separation.

+1000000000

(as an aside, maybe at some point in the future "gay" and "retarded", or at least the latter since it's not being used in its original context very much though the former is, will become thusly divorced from their original meanings - but that day is not today)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
If someone asks me to not use certain words in their presence, I'll do my level best to respect their wishes.

However, this crazy, lame individual will keep using those terms in other places, if only in private. (And yes, I have the professional diagnosis to prove the crazy/insane, and the physical impairment/assistive device to prove the lame part).

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
how do you deal with people in real life? do you start an argument with everyone who uses the word "stupid" in your presence or do you just avoid all non-text based human interaction?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Actually it's 2015 and words have taken on new meanings and the majority of people (especially the younger generation) no longer associate them with their archaic meanings.

You only get offended because you are looking for something to get offended about. I think people like you have difficulty living in the real world or with watching television/movies or reading books. I know for a fact your getting pelted by ~offensive~ words every damn day you step out of your little bubble.

Pay attention to the context people use words in. Also, let people talk the way they want to talk. You have no right to tell other people what words to use. If it offends you then you don't have to associate with them at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
well, that's retarded.
