It's 2015, there are just certain things you shouldn't say anymore.

Or you could realize that sometimes you're just not going to like the things other people say, the way they say it, or the words they use, instead of just going "Hmm learning to tolerate stuff I don't like is too hard, people just shouldn't say things I don't like!"

Accepting that assholes will continue to exist doesn't have to be the same as excusing them for being assholes. Some words should not be used by anyone who wants to be considered a decent person, and if you want others to ignore your words, they may find it simpler to ignore your existence.

Words like "lame," "stupid," and "crazy" are fairly benign and pretty ingrained into every day speech. It's not like the OP wants to be able to say horrible slurs.

You could say the same about any words we now find extremely dated and offensive.

I still have a great-grandmother who calls black people 'coloreds'.

I don't consider people assholes simply because they have a different linguistic policy than me. I don't consider judgmental people that jump to quick conclusions on little basis to be exhibiting superior behavior over someone who uses the word "stupid".

they may find it simpler to ignore your existence.

Golly, what a tragedy.

Wait, we're still on "stupid"? I thought this had turned into one of those threads where folks defend their right to call other people the N-word. I'm sorry I overreacted.

I mean using the word "asshole" will alienate you from certain people.

I think it's less "some words should not be used by anyone who wants to be a decent person" but more read the mood of a conversation and be aware that there's certain words that might offend people.

For the most part language policing isn't effective, especially with word ingrained in everyday speech. People usually end up saying them anyway, just not around people who'll be offended. And even if it were, the point of slurs is to be offensive, so people would come up with equally nasty alternatives.
