I've seen people catch flak for using 'crazy' and 'stupid' on tumblr.

But yeah, I think the whole SJW thing was also becoming prevalent on LJ. Communities with decent mods were able to shut that down though; on tumblr it's a free for all.

This pretty much proves my point that most people remember (whether it be with rose-tinted nostalgia or personal experience) that LJ wasn't as festering of a SJW hellhole as Tumblr is, when in reality, there were parts of LJ that were like that. It's just that, given the "insular" nature of LJ communities and personal journals, 90% of the time, none of it really pinged anyone's radar. With how "open" Tumblr is, all that stuff is now out in the open for everyone to see.

Yeah, exactly. I did have one comm where the SJWs were horrible, and the mods didn't do anything, though TBH I think they just liked the drama.

(One time I asked on a comm if people with service dogs have ID for the dogs. I was accused of being ableist and thinking people with service animals should all wear signs. I clearly did not mean that. Gah.)

Weren't people thinking what might happen if a service dog got kidnapped or stolen? :|

AYRT - Good point. IIRC the issue was that the service dog wasn't believed to be one, which totally sucks. I agree. But because most dogs have tags anyway, and I know sometimes people with disabilities wear necklaces or bracelets so that if they ever got lost or hurt or whatever, someone would be able to help them. That's all I meant.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of "Well, if they didn't have ID for the dogs and something happened, then wouldn't that cause more problems, etc".

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Oh, no, I get that. :) I was just saying that was the last thing they cared about, they wanted to accuse me of being ableist. But I totally agree with you there as well.

Agreed with everything you said.

The SJW thing started on LJ, but I think the key point you made was "decent mods". A lot of people became disenchanted with FFRants over the shift to SJW-everything, and a lot of people did particularly note the poor moddding.

And I suspect the rise of SJW in LJ also hastened the end of LJ, in that the thoughtful meta wasn't considered safe to post any more, unless you posted it under f-lock.

What does surprise me, thought, is that the SJW movement became so prevalent in Tumblr.

NAYRT - Yes, good modding was everything. I was in one comm that the mod clearly had no interest in anymore anyway; she'd get mad at people for reporting problems when it was her job to address them. Technically there was another mod, but they were inactive. The comm did get new ownership and it's better now, but it's also really quiet because (understandably) most people left.

And you're right that it did get harder to post meta because of the wank potential. (SJW and otherwise.)

What does surprise me, thought, is that the SJW movement became so prevalent in Tumblr.

The way tumblr is set up it's easy to see others opinions and invade their space through tags or send anon hate.

On LJ you could set your blog or certain posts to friends only but on tumblr anyone can see your stuff and there are no private communities where like-minded people can gather in a safe space. No moderators to police the tags or track who is sending you anon hate.

Not to mention the busted search function which you have to type certain traceable words l/////ik.e th///i.s in order to keep yourself from showing up.
