I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Can we stop this now please.

There is nothing more cringe and a denial of reality then these constant memes to get you to "love yourself"

It should be okay to love ourselves despite that right

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...that's what I hate about the "everyone is beautiful" movement -- it can't help but imply that our value and deserving to be loved are tied to being beautiful

NAYRT

I don't follow these movements, but is there any chance it's more of a 'everyone is a beautiful person no matter what society thinks you look like/what's inside is what counts' type thing?

That's exactly it. I hate that women are judged mostly by their looks, but these movements are specifically trying to counteract judgments on looks. They aren't saying you are only your looks, they are saying everyone is beautiful because there is no objective standard and who you are is just great. And that is a pretty powerful message. They don't always go about it exactly the right way, and sometimes they do focus too much on looks, but these movements are something that we need.

"Denial of reality"? You say this like there is some sort of objective standard of beautiful. There is nothing wrong with helping people to love themselves and be happy with who they are. Literally nothing wrong with it. Especially when society is all about judging people for their looks. Doing the opposite is not hurting anyone at all.

There is an objective standard of beauty, though. It's not the same everywhere and always, but it's there. That's why cosmetics and surgery to look perfect are such big business.

No. There is a standard of what society says is beautiful, but that isn't actually objective. That is just a subjective standard held up as objective. Looks and attractiveness are actually entirely subjective.

ehhhh it does seem that humanity has a tendency to find symmetry beautiful. I'd argue that works as some kind of semi-objective beauty standard.

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's to adhere to a SUBjective standard of beauty. One that has enough influence behind it that people think it's objective.

I just want people to not remove mirrors in restrooms.

People are doing that? How are you supposed to tell if you have something in your teeth or if your hair is still in place?

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Like... one popular post on tumblr with a photo of a bathroom mirror that had been removed, but this is not actually a thing.

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno if it's a thing or not, but every now and then you see a picture where the mirror over the sink is gone and someone's written "YOU LOOK FINE" or words to that effect.

Typically with commentary, "I know I'm gorgeous, but do I have something my teeth?" etc.

Those "all women are beautiful goddesses" memes reinforce my self loathing, because they just force me to think "The only reason you can make a blanket statement like that is because you haven't met me."

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you feel like that. I think it's incorrect, BTW.

I'm a snake from outer space!

Not a goddess, tho'.

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

I have always been very confident, and that's partly because I realized early on I'm never going to be conventionally pretty, and then decided that it didn't matter because I have so much more to offer to the world than my looks. I'm intelligent, compassionate and hard-working - who'd trade that for being pretty?

I do have insecurities, yeah, but they have more to do with character flaws like being short tempered or arrogant.

But I am a goddess.

I especially enjoy casting curses upon those who incur my rage. Also telling people their future in a riddle that they'll never decode.

Well I am Goddess (and so are you, and so is mildew).

Beautiful is another issue altogether.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I understand the point that beauty is subjective. But the thing is that I don't meet my personal standards. It's not like I have a narrow definition of beauty or anything; there are women with various features and sizes I find pretty. Honestly, I find beauty in pretty much every woman I see except for myself.

Memes like that are pointless babble to me. I know I have a pretty face but an obese body. I live with it just fine.

Re: I'm/we're beautiful/a goddess

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Word. I'm not attractive, but that's seriously fine. I don't have to be. I have worth outside of how I look! I love myself plenty, but insisting that I call myself beautiful is honestly just patronizing.

I hate this shit because it just reinforces that women's only true worth comes from physical beauty-- even if we have to lie to ourselves and each other to give each other that worth.
