I don't know, I think sometimes it forces the writers to be creative. I really liked what they did in DS9 with Kira's pregnancy, even if it was a little weird to start out with. Having the tension of Kira as a sort-of-but-not member of Miles and Keiko's family added some really interesting dynamics.

Yeah, that was a really smart way to keep the actor on the show, as it was exceedingly unlikely that Major Kira would have a child at that time of her life, if ever.

Losing Kira would have been a crying shame. She's an amazing character.
