Wow. The ignorance of what CGI costs is staggering here.

That reminds me of anecdotes like how they got Linda Hamilton's twin sister in to double for her in a couple of scenes in Terminator 2 which saved them piles of money, and how a simple pan-away-remove-prop-pan-back trick saved a pile of money in the first Transformers movie.

"ACK!! PREGNANT BELLIES SQUICK/TRIGGER ME!!"
In 3...2...1...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly, they do trigger me, but this picture doesn't. I guess it's more the idea of ME being pregnant, and I'm not making that association here. That's good to know.

Yeah, so, I know you're just being a shit-stirrer, some people really are squicked or triggered by pregnancy and probably would have appreciated a warning.

Of course it's an excuse! It's not a requirement to do pregnancy in fic, but it's definitely an opportunity!

You act like getting pregnant is this big difficult thing. Nah. Being pregnant is terrible. Getting pregnant is too easy.

I don't know, I think sometimes it forces the writers to be creative. I really liked what they did in DS9 with Kira's pregnancy, even if it was a little weird to start out with. Having the tension of Kira as a sort-of-but-not member of Miles and Keiko's family added some really interesting dynamics.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was a really smart way to keep the actor on the show, as it was exceedingly unlikely that Major Kira would have a child at that time of her life, if ever.

I do hate when a character is given a pregnancy storyline out of the blue because the actor is pregnant. I would much, much rather the creators just do their best to disguise the bump and we all just pretend it's not there until the actress gives birth.

Giving a character a baby when it wasn't in the original plan for the story is a narrative decision that forever shapes the character and the story you're telling. I feel like a lot of writers don't really realize what a huge chunk of narrative structure they are dropping abruptly into their story and forcing the story to accommodate. (Can you imagine if Scully had a baby in S2 of The X-Files, rather than being briefly abducted? *shudders*)

By comparison, simply asking your audience to put their baby bump blinders on for a few episodes is such a minor thing that I don't understand why the writers would ever choose the former option.

But I do feel like you're hugely underestimating the cost of that kind of complicated CGI work, OP. I don't think using CGI to disguise a pregnancy is something that's particularly doable yet, in a budgetary sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I especially hate it when said baby storyline turns into a contrived plotline they do away with, like the writers realized "you know what, nevermind baby."

Although I think it happens in general with baby plotlines, not just the actress being pregnant. Look at 30 Rock - they gave Jack a baby, made him all about being a dad, then got tired of it and... actually, I forget what happened.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i agree. just use close ups for the season.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
It was funny, because she looked super pregnant but they hid it as well as they could (big coats, most of her job early in the season was as a medical examiner so she was always behind a desk or morgue table, and then in the trunk of a car!) but when the character was pregnant in season 8, Gillian Anderson didn't look the slightest bit like she had looked when actually pregnant!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
How does a character earn a pregnancy storyline? I don't understand.

thru hard work and gumption

CGI would be expensive for that.

But they could do what a lot of shows do and just have them shot at very precise angles and sometimes having THINGS blocking the entire view of them. It's worked before.

I would rather preg stories happen when that is exactly what a writer is aiming for and wants, not because it's convenient.

I just wish they'd be a little more creative.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Surrogates are a thing, after all. And so much better than: Hey, that character is getting fat (looking at you Fraiser).

Though, I kind of like when they hide the pregnancy using flowers or coats or purses or whatever ridiculous thing they hide it behind. In one soap, they kidnapped three characters whose actresses were all pregnant to a spa or something and put them in big robes.

So most of the songs involving Frank will have to be rewritten

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Or they could just assume the audience is smart enough to figure out that actress =/= character and ignore it. The Nanny did this with Lauren Lane and it was perfect. Lauren Lane was preggers. CC wasn't. She just wandered around being massively pregnant and no one said a word.

I wish more shows would follow suit. Over on OUAT, writing in Ginny Godwin's pregnancy completely ruined Snow White as a character, and the less said about Cordelia on Angel, the better.

ITA with this secret. Grimm, I'm looking at you!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
CGI is good enough, I guess, but it's way too expensive to do this for anything but a big budget movie. Even then, they'd be far more likely to go for old fashioned techniques like having the actress wear baggy clothes, standing behind stuff, or just doing the shoulders/head shot and using doubles for full body shots.

I remember during King of Queen's... I think 5th season, Leah Remini was pregnant. They didn't write a pregnancy storyline (that didn't happen until the very last season), but instead hid her belly as best as they could. You could however see that she had gained some weight and had some water retention.
