(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
lolol you go there? was pretty fun to see ppl in costumes and the random swastika in irving

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
OP

That would've been a bit jarring, all right.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
they had a swastika in the library for a while and covered it up with a velvet curtain. was kind of hilarious

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Lol yeah. Seeing swastikas and the flags of the Imperial Japanese army on campus was really weird haha

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Seeing that would've definitely made me think I'd stepped into an alternate universe! :P

Well, that's insane.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Of course a German came up with this--someone for whom the Mediterranean sea and the livelihoods of those on it were entirely theoretical.

OP

In our world the Italians basically went "O_o the fuck??? You might not wanna do this tyvm."

So...instead of digging the Suez Canal, this world's people decided to fill in the Mediterranean? There's a geoengineering project and a half...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Indeed. Only the kind of megalomania the Nazis were known for could have driven a project like that to its conclusion. Still smh at that.

I spent an embarrassingly long time staring at that picture and trying to figure out what was wrong with it. And then I realized "Wait, where the fuck is the Mediterranean? IT'S GONE?!"

So... you're telling me there is a real person somewhere out there who wants to get rid of the entire fucking Mediterranean Sea? How stupid would you have to be to think that's a good idea?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've met persons exactly that kind of dumb. Many, many of them. They are so obsessed with the idea of building something that they can't accept that they are destroying something of more value. And if you tell them off, they just think you're a hater.

Well, there was, 60-odd years ago. Herman Sörgel, who came up with the idea, died in 1952. Although he didn't want to completely eliminate it...just mostly.

There probably are still people who consider it a good idea, though.

When the people who are working for you do it for free (payment is not getting a bullet through their heads), you might get big ideas.

Well, to be fair, the actual proposal wasn't to drain the entire sea - just to lower water levels by a few hundred meters, enough to drain most of the Aegean and the Adriatic, but there's still be plenty of Mediterranean water left.

The idea was to build a giant hydroelectric dam at Gibraltar that could power Europe, and the new land created would provide a peaceful alternative to colonizing foreign territory for European expansion. The guy who proposed it also had the idea of damning the Congo river to create new lakes that could be used to irrigate the Sahara.

So really, a perfectly fine plan, as long as you ignore little details like "Won't that just create giant salt flats, not usable land?" and "You know irrigation won't magically turn desert sands into fertile cropland, right?"

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well the Mediterranean is getting rid of itself already, albeit on a geological scale, a bit sped up by mankind fucking up rivers and soil erosion; the guy "only" proposed to speed up things on a human lifetime scale.

My first thought was, "With all the seemingly arbitrary divisions, why are the Canadian and Mexican borders the same?" That seems like one of the easiest things to change, especially if the division was done in the mid-20th century. Then I noticed the Mediterranean.
