While I think this is in part true, I also hate the "poor people can't have nice things" mentality. ad people are hella judgmental about how poor people, especially those on welfare spend nice things.

And as someone on a budget: don't assume you know how people arrange their finances. Maybe that person ate ramen for a month to afford those shoes, and yeah, maybe you wouldn't consider that a good life choice - but frankly people have the right to have other priorities than you. and to want nice thins every now and then.

Also some people are very good at getting stuff for cheap/free. I got a lot of quality clothes/shoes cheap online second hand. And the obvious thing is you know someone. Like a sister/cousin who does manicures or whatever.

I'm not saying some people don't make terrible financial choices, just that poor people are not immune to wanting nice stuff every now and then, especially in a society that overflows with consumerism.

Yes, all of this. I hate the idea that just because someone is on welfare that means the general public gets to decide what they spend their money on. They get their food stamps, they should get to use them for whatever they want.

"They get their food stamps, they should get to use them for whatever they want."

Fuck no. I grew up on food stamps. I think they need to be MORE strict about what you can by (like how WIC is).

I don't agree. Not unless everyone now gets to decide what everyone buys. Otherwise, people shouldn't be penalized just because they are on food stamps. They should be free to make their own choices the same as anyone else.

No, because everyone else uses the money they earned. Not the money OTHER people earned and were taxed on.

If I can decide where my tax money goes for some things, I want to decide on all things.

It isn't your money once it has been taxed. It is the government's money. And part of the government's job is to provide for the poor. Once they give them to the poor, it is theirs to do with as they see fit.

People aren't poor because they are lazy and haven't earned anything. People are poor because the system is stacked against them, because there aren't enough jobs for everyone, because so many of the jobs that exist don't pay a livable wage, and because the system continually oppresses them and makes things harder. So what if poor people want nice things every once in a while. No one else has the right to judge them for that or to tell them what they can or can't buy.

Honestly, that mind set really, really pisses me off.

Excellent post.

It isn't your money once it has been taxed. It is the government's money.

This. Unless one isn't working, we're ALL putting our money into things we personally may or may not approve of. At some point we all have to learn to deal with that fact somehow.

Yup. I have problems with my tax money going to the defense budget. It doesn't matter. That's part of paying into the system. Sometimes you pay for things you don't like. That is what taxes is. You don't get to pick and choose.

Compared against that, I'd love my money to go to poor people buying treats for themselves and their children.

Exactly. Much better use of the money. Before we talk about how poor people spend the tiny, completely inadequate amount we give them, how about we talk about the nearly 50% of our budget that goes to defense? How about we cut some of that first?

"If I can decide where my tax money goes for some things, I want to decide on all things."

Honey, I have some bad news for you.

(You're not going to control everything your taxed money goes to. And if you're really that upset that your taxes are buying a poor person chips you need some fucking perspective, Grow the fuck up and get over yourself)

You don't get to decide where your tax money goes, period. Do you tell your landlord how to spend his money after you pay your rent? No, because then it's your landlord's money. Same principle.

If you are by yourself? Fine. but when you have kids, stop buying designer clothes and feed your damn kids.

Well, I specifically wasn't talking about kids. But even then: what makes you think you can be the judge of if those kids are well-fed or not? Frankly unless you're living with that family you simply do not know.

Re: Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
But you can't buy designer clothes with food stamps. Hell, you can't buy tampons with food stamps, or toilet paper. And you aren't just given food stamps, you have to make less than a specified amount of money to qualify. So these hypothetical kids would get fed regardless.
