Re: Controversial Opinions

I'm liberal, I believe in welfare and food stamps and a higher minimum wage... but I think it's incredibly naive to pretend that there aren't people who are poor because they waste money. I don't mean in a "ugh she used food stamps for potato chips" way, I mean "one minute you're crying because you can't find a job, now you're showing me your new expensive shoes."

I just wish you could address both issues without coming across as classicist.

Of course there are a small number of people who abuse the system. But the problem is assuming that is the vast majority of people and taking away the system that many people need based on the abuses of a few. Every system everywhere is taken advantage by some people. That is never going to change. That doesn't mean we should stop helping those who really do need it, as many conservatives claim.

AYRT - Oh, totally! That's where I get irritated with the conservative perspective. (Also, I find it interesting that they never mention the wealthy who evade taxes. At least the people the conservatives attack pay them.)

I don't think they're talking specifically about people abusing social welfare systems. More about people whose money, no matter how much they make, just runs through their fingers like water because they have no impulse control or ability to differentiate a need from a want.

While I think this is in part true, I also hate the "poor people can't have nice things" mentality. ad people are hella judgmental about how poor people, especially those on welfare spend nice things.

And as someone on a budget: don't assume you know how people arrange their finances. Maybe that person ate ramen for a month to afford those shoes, and yeah, maybe you wouldn't consider that a good life choice - but frankly people have the right to have other priorities than you. and to want nice thins every now and then.

Also some people are very good at getting stuff for cheap/free. I got a lot of quality clothes/shoes cheap online second hand. And the obvious thing is you know someone. Like a sister/cousin who does manicures or whatever.

I'm not saying some people don't make terrible financial choices, just that poor people are not immune to wanting nice stuff every now and then, especially in a society that overflows with consumerism.

Yes, all of this. I hate the idea that just because someone is on welfare that means the general public gets to decide what they spend their money on. They get their food stamps, they should get to use them for whatever they want.

YES! I can't stand those posts about how "Don't be mean to poor people who wear designer clothes or have a new iphone or a fancy car or the newest game console." Fuck off and fuck them.

I was poor growing up. On food stamps, free school lunch, the whole damn thing. Sometimes we'd have to choose between water or electricity for that month. And I grew up around other poor people (birds of a feather flock together and all that).

And none of us had designer clothes or new phones or game consoles. Because our parents were not assholes who wasted money on unimportant shit.

Yeah, I know people like that, too. It's one of my pet peeves. I still support welfare, food stamps and a higher minimum wage because of all the people who are struggling AND because even spendthrifts have kids who shouldn't suffer just because their parents are idiots.

Nice shoes last longer, tho. Like, really. A high-end shoe is going to last for YEARS. Cheap shoes I have to replace in MONTHS.

Yes. Which really is part of another problem, that poor people often end up getting more cost by buying cheap stuff that eventually costs them more money in the long run, because it breaks down.

For a lot of products there's a threshold beneath which it's not really worth paying for. As in, you get such a shitty product that it's not worth the money. So it's important to take that into account.
The secret to good buying is finding the minimum price at which you can get something of reasonable quality.

Re: Controversial Opinions

Well, consider, for instance: the price of expensive new shoes is nowhere close to the price of monthly rent and utilities for a decent place to live. But if you pay the rent at your crappy hole in the wall you may happen to have a few hundred dollars left over sometimes, and you're not losing anything by making a purchase with the shoes. I bought a few expensive frivolous things that way when I was unemployed and living off benefits.

I see that all the fucking time and it is a huge reason I'm a Republican.

It's especially precious when they have new phones, designer clothes/shoes/handbags, and the latest and greatest tech crap, and then have the nerve to make mouth noises like, 'You don't understand. You've obviously never been poor and have no idea what it's like.'

I buy my clothes from consignment shops, I have no tv, and my food costs are usually less than $100 a month because vegetables and lentils are cheaper than shit labeled 'fast food.' Budgeting, saving up a cushion in case of emergencies, and not buying shit you don't need are not difficult.

And spare me the noise about food deserts. That's been proven to be a lie:

From what I can tell it's one of the only reasons you're a Republican.

Pretty much two reasons: because of this, and because it pisses people off.

I didn't read all of those articles, but one line in the last one struck me. "The cost of food — and people’s habits of shopping and eating — appear to be much more powerful than just convenience." Uh, duh? I would love to eat healthily. However, I generally walk the two and a half miles to and from work. I am fortunate that there is a grocery store right by my work, but it's a hassle to get food home. (If I take the bus, I only have to walk about 3/4 of a mile.) However, if I had a grocery store less than a block away, I can't say that I would eat entirely healthily because fruits and vegetables are expensive. I can have a dinner of pasta and butter or sauce for about $.50. This fills me up for the night. That amount of fruits and vegetables would be nothing comparatively. (For the record, I do get a ride to my local farmer's market every other week and pick up at least some cheap things, but it's not as much as I would like.) Cost matters. Also, what people have grown used to matters. If you start a kid eating fruits and vegetables young, then they develop a taste for them and will eat them. If they aren't exposed to them, then unsurprisingly, they won't tend to choose them. Grocery stores and community gardens and public/farmer's markets need to be a thing long term, and people need to be encouraged/incentivized/subsidized to use them to get the next generation to start eating healthy and to allow them to afford to eat healthy.

1. There are services to help with money management, so it's being addressed.
2. Shoes and smart phones can be had for less than the price of groceries or a doctor's visit these days. In fact, you can get the smart phone for "free" in many cases with a contract for services that people need if they're job hunting.

I agree to some extent. I worked in a welfare agency for a while, and the social workers did talk about how there were people that if they learned to budget properly would have been able to significantly improve their situation.
I think it's not so much spending on expensive shoes, but making a lot of small, poor decisions about spending.
For example, my roommate is hella wasteful. She has dishes, but she eats off of paper basically all the time. So not only is she spending more on paper goods, she also spends a lot on trash bags. And she goes through paper towels a mile a minute.
Or for example, if you want soda, instead of buying it at a vending machine, buy them in bulk and then just take one with you when you want it. Bring coffee/tea with you rather than buying it each time.
Each of these is a small expense, but when added up, they really can add up.

Though also I think that overall, people should stay out of other people's budgeting unless it's a close friend asking for advice or something.
