Yeah, and the people who sell it take advantage of the very fact that poor people will wind up spending a lot of money on cheap stuff rather than less on expensive stuff.

And let's not even get into the atrocity that is "rent to buy."

I had no idea what rent to buy was, and I just looked it up.... O_O it's basically a "have your cake and eat it too" for the renter, isn't it?

Yeah, it usually winds up costing the person who falls for it a lot more money than it would if they just bought it even if they DON'T wind up getting their furniture/tools/whatever repossessed anyway and all the money they spent lost, because the cost of all the payments in the rent-to-buy arrangement always exceeds the cash-down price. They get away with it because they know a lot of poor people don't have credit, and either don't have enough income or don't have the financial skills to wait and save up a big enough chunk of cash to buy the thing outright.

I would rather trust lay-buy and wait for my item than pay two or three times the price just to have it now.
