For a lot of products there's a threshold beneath which it's not really worth paying for. As in, you get such a shitty product that it's not worth the money. So it's important to take that into account.
The secret to good buying is finding the minimum price at which you can get something of reasonable quality.

Yeah, and the people who sell it take advantage of the very fact that poor people will wind up spending a lot of money on cheap stuff rather than less on expensive stuff.

And let's not even get into the atrocity that is "rent to buy."

I had no idea what rent to buy was, and I just looked it up.... O_O it's basically a "have your cake and eat it too" for the renter, isn't it?

Yeah, it usually winds up costing the person who falls for it a lot more money than it would if they just bought it even if they DON'T wind up getting their furniture/tools/whatever repossessed anyway and all the money they spent lost, because the cost of all the payments in the rent-to-buy arrangement always exceeds the cash-down price. They get away with it because they know a lot of poor people don't have credit, and either don't have enough income or don't have the financial skills to wait and save up a big enough chunk of cash to buy the thing outright.

"rent to owe" is what it should be called

I would rather trust lay-buy and wait for my item than pay two or three times the price just to have it now.
