Looking for manga reccomendations

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've read most of the more popular ones so maybe skip over those, but any sort of rec is fine.

I rec Akatsuki no Yona to everybody everywhere. It's great. It's adorable and funny, and everything Fushigi Yuugi wanted to be but wasn't.
Great female protagonist who goes through a lot of development, great secondary protagonists who are all lovely and adorable and with a nice dose of angst.
The plotting is a little bit weak and contrived in some places (and it's noticeable imo because it IS overall a pretty great series).

Genre?

I'm open to a lot of things. I like josei, hipster bullshit, and SOL stuff in particular. Not too big on horror, generic shounen jump plots, or gorefests, but if other aspects are good (ie character interactions, art, or plot) I'll look past it.

I know this is popular, but Death Note is amazing. No filler or anything, it's pure plot, and isn't even that long. If by chance you haven't read it, it's worth checking out!

Weird fruits

that are good to eat

Re: Weird fruits

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I recently tried passion fruit and I thought it was really delicious.

They're such a bother to eat though. I'd rather drink the juice.

When I was a kid there was a period when I ate a ton of starfruit/carambola. I should try it again.

I freaking love pomegranates. They're so delicious.

Rambutans resemble bright red sea urchins but taste like nectar of the gods.

THIS. They're so good, but I'm spoiled and the canned/frozen ones you get in the States are not the same. :(

The big grocery store in my home town has rambutans, but how do I tell if they're fresh? I suspect they sit around a long time because how many people in the middle of Iowa even know what a rambutan is, besides some of the students at the university?

I'm sad that rambutan season is over. The ones I see in the market these days look dismal.

Back in college, I used to buy half a kilo of rambutan from a street vendor on my way home and I usually end up eating them all by evening. When I'm feeling generous, I'd buy a kilo so half of it is mine and the other half would be for the rest of the family. I am a rambutan glutton.

Kiwifruit is pretty good.

If you can get fresh mangosteen, try it, and also I'm jealous of anyone who has regular access to it. Fresh jackfruit is interesting. There are a bunch of others I'd love to try, but those two I've actually had.

My grandpa used to have a jackfruit tree in his front yard. Every year it would grow just one fruit, usually weighing 30 kilos or so, and once it's ripe enough he'd invite us all in his house and we'd have a jackfruit party. SO YUMMY.

I have a friend whose family owns a mangosteen farm, and they would give away mangosteen on the verge of being overripe so it won't spoil. I like eating it with a bit of salt to bring out the sweetness.

Child abuse recovery

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-11-12 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've had this strange urge for fics where adults are working through and recovering from being abused as a child. I'm looking for stuff that is pretty realistic and pretty dark but also shows at least the starts of recovery.

I don't have many and unfortunately one is The Walking Dead fandom and the other isn't very dark/realistic.

I have no idea what you'll make of this--it might be impenetrable if you don't watch Steven Universe. http://archiveofourown.org/works/4999561
