Work Christmas Dinner

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
My work does a Christmas Dinner every year that the boss pays for. This year, everyone but myself and my sister want to go to some place that is a 90 minute drive away. We will not be paid for the driving or eating and will need to make up hours. It is also a restaraunt we are not super excited about.

I'd be happy to just take that time to leave early and/or work to get over time. How can I suggest that I don't want to go without being the party pooper or seen as stuck up?

Why not just say you can't go? Less about you not wanting to and more about, "Gee Wiz, I wish I could but I can't leave work early and [/insert other things here]." The fact is, if everyone wants to go but the two of you then you're not the majority. I mean, it's one thing if they don't care where they eat and it was just one person's suggestion but if it's already pretty much planned and everyone is in agreement but you it's best to just say you can't go.

It's kinda like how my Credential Graduate group all planned to pay and eat together at this one place. I didn't like their food. I did not eat there. I wasn't going to stop 20+ other people from doing what they wanted though.

Well, there are only 8 of us and we all know each other's family so they will know if I am lying! :P

Do you have to lie? Like, you said yourself you can't leave work early cause you don't want to/can't make up the time. Then all you've gotta do is get a friend or family member to need you for some reason at an inconvenient time. Heck, ask your sister to see if she has a reason to not be there and maybe she can pull you with her.

Dude. Just say you can't make it. Why's not their business, but if they ask, you have a prior commitment (maybe with family). I really doubt they're going to say "WHAT?!! Anon can't go?!! Well, now it's just not a party. CANCEL EVERYTHING!"

It is during work hours and we are a tiny company. So we all know each other's business.

You have to go to a work dinner during work hours but then you have to make up the time you didn't work? This doesn't sound right at all.
