I can see why, actually.

Personally I just sort of imagine supernatural entities not to be good OR bad, just sort of wandering aimlessly or doing their thing, you know.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...why wouldn't different supernatural entities be a mix of good ones, bad ones, and just wandering around aimlessly ones, just like different humans?

Eee, friendly monster/demon stories are the best!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I would like more of that too.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
NGL if instead of having, say, a Go-obsessed ghost pop in my life I had a Scrabble-obsessed whatever monster, I'd be a happy happy little nerd.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
that makes it sound like you have a real go-obsessed ghost in your life

I love stories like that so much.
Casper was my favorite movie as a kid, too. Ironically, I wasn't crazy about Monsters Inc.

I vaguely recall reading a Slenderman story on AO3 where Slenderman is re-interpreted as a sort of guardian angel who protects children from other monsters.

Would that be of interest to you?

Not anon, but that would interest me! I love me some Slenderman mythos.

I once read a Sherlock/Slenderman crossover that had strong shades of that. I don't think it's a one-shot and since I first read it, it gained a sequel.

That'd be cool to see tbh.

Me too! I actually had an idea about a story I wanted write like that a while ago.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I love creepy/horrifying/grotesque stuff that's not evil.

I would read or watch it. All monsters/creatures being evil isn't that interesting or creative.

You are Brandon Shane (http://themonsterunderthebed.net/?comic=test-post) and I claim my five pounds.

See, I look at this image and my first reaction is "Someone worked really hard crafting a genuinely scary picture, and then someone else had to undercut it by making it cute and harmless."

Which is weird because I'm all about the death of the author generally. Still trying to figure out why I'm reacting that way.

I was the kind of kid who made her parents look under the bed for monsters and they used to make up stories about these hideous, grotesque monsters who were just lonely and wanted someone to talk to. The stories my parents told me made me get over my fear of monsters. Naturally, I love those types of stories now. Anybody have recs?

Yes, but it's for a song, not a story. Link 1: No Lyrics. Link 2: With Lyrics, albeit spelling mistakes and a few missed words. (I gave both because the spelling mistakes and such take away the enjoyment for some people. Not that I'm one of those people or anything... *cough*)

Lyrics sampling, aka, why you should go listen :)

There's a monster that lives beneath your bed
Oh for crying out loud, it's a futon on the floor
He must be flat as a board

There`s a creature that lurks behind the door
Though I've checked there 15 times
When I leave then he arrives
Every night

-

Tell the monster that eats children, that you taste bad
And you're sure you'd be the worst that he's ever had
If he eats you, don't fret, just cut him open with an axe
Don't regret it, he deserved it, he's a cad

Tell the harpies that land on your bed post
That at the count of five you`ll roast them alive
Tell the devil its time you gave him his due
He should go back to hell, he should shake in his shoes
Cause the mightiest, scariest, creature is you!

-

I won't tell you, there's nothing beneath your bed
I won't tell you, that it's all in your head
This world of ours is not as it seems
The monsters are real but not in your dreams
Learn what you can from the beasts you defeat,
you'll need it for some of the people you meet

(^ personal favorite part of song)

And no, it's a fairly long bedtime ballad, so to speak, so I'm not actually spoiling the whole song. There's more stuff in there. My fiancee and her hubby (poly) are attempting to strike preggers, as she puts it, and I fully intend to have this song memorized by the time kidlet is of the "seeing things under their bed" age, because it is made of win.

Hopefully this makes it to you, anon! I know I'm coming in way late, but I love this song so very much. It doesn't quite fit, because the monsters aren't friendly, but I love the take on it, and nobody else has posted anything, so... :)

there's an anime/manga series sort of based around this idea.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
There's 2 books by Rin Chupeco " The Girl From the Well" and "the Suffering" that take this trope and run with it. The ghost/demon is very "Ring" esque. It's a great series.
