I am horrified by the events in Paris and have never been happier to live in a place remote enough that it would make a poor target for a major attack. I feel bad how relieved I am that this didn't happen to anyone I know, at the same time words can't say how distressing it is that this happened at all.

I live in France, I have family and friends in Paris, and I totally understand you. I won't blame you at all.

Aw. Hey, totally normal, understandable reaction. I just keep picturing all those people waiting for news on their loved ones who live there, with all that craziness and potential for miscommunication and the fact they may have to wait for a good long while to get any news, and...yeah, I share in your relief.

I've lived in a few big cities in my life, including Tokyo and London, which have had and are probably targets for potential terrorist activity. but I'm from a tiny American town in the midwest, which is where I am right now, and it does give me a lot of comfort to know that this is a "safe" place. My home is almost definitely always going to be safe. Terrorism is so fucking scary. On the flip side, we have so much gun violence in the US that I suppose one has to bear in mind that violence and massacres are happening all the time. I don't mean that in a "always be afraid" way, but the thought gives me some perspective on these things, too.

My family almost went to Paris two years ago, and I just keep thinking, "what if we'd gone and it had happened then?" So yeah. The mind goes weird places.
