Was Assad right all along?

He warned that Europe supporting and financing terrorism in Syria will come back to haunt them like a scorpion and here we are. We trained and equipped terrorists in the name of democracy and now those terrorists are attacking our countries.

Not like I want to defend the guy or anything, but I'm starting to think that we should have listened to him.

You can argue about whether it was a good move, but at the end of the day, there would still be plenty of people who would be motivated to do these kinds of awful things. And supporting, frankly, hideous dictatorships does not seem like a compelling long-term plan to me.

DA. Dunno. When Saddam and Gaddafi were still in power, the whole area wasn't the clusterfuck it is at the moment.

Exactly. Sometimes you have to settle for the lesser of two evils. It sucks, but that's how the world is.

Saddam and Gaddafi were both in power when 9/11 happened.

And, I mean, Gaddafi actively supported terrorism, and almost certainly actively oversaw the organization of terrorist attacks.

I meant the situation in the Middle East. No major uprisings or civil wars and the governments functioned. Refugees were leaving the area, but nowhere near in the numbers that are leaving now.

Ah.

In that case... yes, equipping rebels in Syria probably did contribute to the situation, but it didn't cause it. There would have been huge amounts of chaos and extremism regardless of whether we equipped the rebels. It was not a wise move. Though still probably smarter than the Iraq invasion from that point of view. It hasn't been a good 20 years in Mideast policy, really.

hahaha, no, pretty much sure Syria's government are fucked up by now. Don't even think they could keep up with their own people running elsewhere.

This fucking enrages me. What's a little genocide if you can have some peace and quiet? I guess that was Hitler's problem, just couldn't keep a tight enough lid on things.

The region's been a mess since the 15th century. Periods of calm, periods of unpublicized horrors, but overall a clusterfuck.

I think it's like the Scylla and Charybdis. Pick your poison, but either option is going to fuck you up.
