TBH I don't really care that much, but to each one's own.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's more that particular typo.

(This might to sound patronizing, but I'm really not trying to be - you do know what cum means, right?)

simple solution

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoid this by never allowing my characters to orgasm.

Me too.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike it in fic but it's not an automatic back button if the rest of the writing is good.

I dislike it in PUBLISHED works. I think it's stupid and editors should be editing it out.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, mostly it makes me think somebody didn't catch it on proofreading.

It would however take me out of the story for brief while though.

Agreed on both parts. I don't like the look of it (I can't explain why, it just looks 'off' and kind of silly), but I don't see it often anyway so I don't feel like it's a major complaint. (I don't think I've read any fantastic porn lately that used the word 'cum', but if I did I wouldn't automatically close out, I would just sit there confused for a few seconds.)

Same. It's the dumbest fucking thing. I'll never understand why anyone thinks it's hotter spelled that way or better as a noun or any of that, and I have a terrible time trying to overlook it even if the rest of the writing is good. Just the look of those three letters together is the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard to me. It's a good thing I never took Latin. lol

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That seems kind of arbitrary, OP. It's like saying I'll back button if someone spells it 'til instead of till. HORRORS.

I understand having a pet peeve, but an author's choice in how to spell alternate spellings doesn't speak to their quality of writing. If they'd used cum as a verb instead of a noun, I'd understand your disgust.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I'm ESL so I'm probably more conservative, since I actively learned "correct" english...
but I kind of think that if you use it in the context of pony porn it's okay. Only, when I'm reading a story with serious plot and then the Sex scene changes tone that way... completely turns me off

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike this too, OP. It looks so out of place in an otherwise well written fic because I see "cum" and think of textspeak written by horny teens and it puts me right off.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
wait, it's actually wrong? I thought it was an alternate spelling or something

It isn't an automatic backbutton for me, but I do hate seeing cum in anything.

Haha, see, and I actually LIKE the 'cum' spelling, if it fits the scene. It seems a lot more dirty and gritty, where 'come' is more of a coy euphemism. 'Come' imo is like 'member' or 'manhood' or something where it's sort of trite and bland.

I must be odd, because I actually prefer "cum". I mean, we are actually talking about porn, right?

Yep. Can't help backspacing away.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
This whole thread is amazing to me. I hate when people use 'come' for... that particular thing.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2015-11-15 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I use cum to mean semen and I use come for the act of orgasm.

OH MAN.

I'm with you, OP, I hate 'cum'. It just feels cringeworthy to me. It's not an instant backbutton, I mean, if a writer is good, then I can overlook it, but if I see it once, then I'm far more likely to skip over the writer's other sex scenes to avoid seeing it.

[personal profile] mishey22 2015-11-15 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Same, op

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
I am so with you OP. I hate the word "cum." I hate it slightly less when it's used to describe ejaculate, as opposed to when it's used to describe the act of orgasming, but really I hate it in both usages.

Like many others in this thread, I won't necessarily back button when I see it, but what I will do, almost every time this happens, is I'll c/p the fic into a Word document and then do a find-and-replace. I'll even take the time to approve each of the changes individually, so that no other instances of the letters c-u-m get changed accidentally.

I will do this even for longer fics.

It's worth it.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Seeing it in the middle of a hot sex scene is like a sudden cold shower.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for it much either, but unless it's heavily featured, I just kind of grimace and go on, but if the author uses 'cumming' instead of coming, that's pretty much it for me.
