I'm still firmly in my fandom myself, but I understand this secret very much. I hate the word 'smol' (who even came up with this atrocity?), and while I get that a lot of people in fandom are teenagers, what do they like so much about my favourite characters if they're just going to portray as the exact opposite of what they're actually like? Logically I know people can do what they like, and it's not like they're doing anything that can even be considered bad, but it annoys me so much.

It's probably the "perversion" itself that they like. They don't need more of the actual character in fanon. The contrast between IC and fanon characteristics gives them a kick.
