I'm still firmly in my fandom myself, but I understand this secret very much. I hate the word 'smol' (who even came up with this atrocity?), and while I get that a lot of people in fandom are teenagers, what do they like so much about my favourite characters if they're just going to portray as the exact opposite of what they're actually like? Logically I know people can do what they like, and it's not like they're doing anything that can even be considered bad, but it annoys me so much.

It's probably the "perversion" itself that they like. They don't need more of the actual character in fanon. The contrast between IC and fanon characteristics gives them a kick.

I do think there's a point past which fluff can be unrealistic, and the glossing over of character traits which reduce the fluff factor can also create unrealistic scenarios.

I keep reading "smol" left and right, where did that even come from??

It didn't originate on tumblr.

What does it even mean? I've been staring at it since this post went up and I'm like... huh?

Haha, that doesn't quite describe some of the characters I've seen the word used for, but I guess it's all done in a lighthearted manner.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think it basically means "appealingly vulnerable"? Like, if the character is being characterized as particularly insecure about themselves, usually with lots of painful feelings they are stoically hiding/trying to hide.

I would call "smol" the cousin of "woobie," though I actually feel like I have less understanding of what a woobie truly is, so I could be off the mark there.

It just started as a way to refer to cute, tiny animals. I have no idea what and how it morphed into what it did in fandom.

It sounds like this is one of those things everyone interprets a bit differently, but I could see that; fandom loves its woobies (even if the character they're trying to make a woobie isn't much of one, lol).

Not that I disagree about vulnerability being appealing, because it totally is, but if I was going to call a character 'appealingly vulnerable' I'd use those words instead; it's more direct and less confusing.

Thanks, though! I feel like I understand it a bit better after this thread.

I get where you are coming from. It used to bother me too. I'm past being bothered, though, as long as everyone realizes that it is crack and not the actual canon characters. My fandom, at least, seems to understand the difference most of the time.

Ugh, 'smol'... it was marginally cute the first time I saw it in one of my fandoms, and thought that it was just somebody (probably a younger fan) being enthusiastic about a character. AND THEN IT WAS FUCKING EVERYWHERE AND EEURRRGH WHY.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, holy crap, I hate that word.

Pretty sure 'smol' actually started as a word to describe really tiny animals.

I think it's kind of a cute word myself (it's hard to describe, but when I say it out loud it sounds... smaller than small), but... I generally find it odd when applied to fictional characters or people period. SU fandom especially is starting to go overkill with it (though even then, it's relatively harmless).
