Count Fosco from The Woman In White. So stylish, so dastardly, so cunning and competent and intelligent, and so completely, completely fucking evil and creepy and awful. He is everything a villain should be.

It's a shame that most of the book is... not great, because the parts of it that are good are so fantastic.

I agree. He was an A+ villain and probably the strongest part of the novel. Though IMO Marian was also a very good character (particularly given the era the book was written in).

Oh, no, Marian is absolutely the best - she's one of my favorite characters in anything ever. Definitely one of the parts of the novel I had in mind as being excellent (also Pesca is pretty good, and there's some really effective moments of atmosphere). Frankly I would love it if Marian could run away and be in her own novel entirely, she deserves so much better than she gets. Also do I maybe have a crush on her? Maybe I do.

It is kind of funny how much more interesting the secondary characters are than the main characters - Walter, Laura and Glyde are all sort of dippy and cliched, and then you have these other characters who are just hanging around to help them who are actually fantastic and bizarre and much more interesting.

Personally I viewed Marian as the book's second protagonist, so I've never really felt like it was a "boring main characters vs. interesting secondary characters" thing. But I do agree with you about Walter and Laura. Walter wasn't an awful character, but he was rather dull. Though in truth I think my main beef with Walter is that I can't bring myself to respect him when he, without any sort of internal conflict, fixes all his romantic affections on someone meek and naive, simply because she is beautiful. Meanwhile Marian, who is so awesome, is dismissed out of and because she's markedly not beautiful.

Then again, I guess boring people appeal to boring people? Which is to say that Marian was far too good for him anyway.

I don't hate Laura, for the record. I recognize she was shaped by the time and the circumstances she lived in. I just hate that the narrative itself basically adores her specifically for having very little thoughts in her pretty little head and very little mettle in her pretty little life.
