Slash fangirls pretend that shipping=pro gay activism.
I roll my eyes at the level of defensiveness, victimism and rhetoric of some people who minimize some issues.
Lately, it almost seems like calling slash fans out on their hypocrisy and problematic behaviors is not 'politically correct'.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
But do you think that slash is wrong in itself?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
No. Shipping slash itself is just part of the shipping subculture.

Slash fangirls have not pretended that since the early 2000's. It's nothing but a strawman now. It's more common now for you to see the other extreme -- the slash-haters pretend the only reason anyone writes slash is out of pretense of gay activism, so they pretend that's why they don't like slash, when the real reason is that they find reading about gay stuff icky (while doing no real gay activism themselves, either).

This is true. What is also common now is people harassing slash writers for not liking women, or acting like pairings that have women on them are superior. Example: Dragon age 2 and Fem!Hawke x Fenris.

Exactly. I unfollowed a bunch of people on Tumblr because their posts about shipping were always to the tune of "Silly slashers! Shipping d00dz isn't progressive! I ship [het pairing] because ladies are so important and necessary uwwwwwwu"

nyart

It does happen (see Sterek tinhatters in Teen Wolf or Johnlock tinhatters in Sherlock), but it's nowhere near as common as it used to be.
