I'm not sure about how far back we are going with this.

I started back in 2002 in the Yu Yu Hakusho and Gundam Wing fandoms. The former full of ooc fluff fic where Hiei and Kurama kiss at the end. The latter following Sturgeon's law to a T.

I will say that current fic is more about the pornz than when I started but fic containing "gay but not really gay" is thankfully fading.

Plotty fic is still a thing. The Hunger Games and Inception fandoms have created amazing backstories for their characters. Sherlock fandom has AUs that blow my mind sometimes. Hannibal fandom has done interesting things with the source material. Worldbuilding Star Trek fic ftw. Harry Potter fandom is still looking into the wizarding world as much as ever. Avengers fandom can be very thoughtful. Designations Congruent with Things and From the Ocean Risen continue to blow my socks off.

There is just more fanfic being written then ever, so while there is more average/bad fic, there is also more amazing fic.
