(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)But I just wanted to say, I get where you're coming from (what with being a lesbian and constantly seeing my sexual orientation objectified in everything ever).
The state of modern slash fandom really is a sad thing. It wasn't always like this; fanfic writers used to actually care about the characters' canon personalities and motivations. Now it's all Migratory Slash Fandom latching onto Any Two White Guys they can project their favourite clichés onto. I'm not yet jaded enough to abandon my slash ships entirely, but I usually don't bother to look for fic anymore. No one gives a shit about characterization or plot anymore; it's all about the mindless fluff and PWP that could easily be about literally any ship with how generic it is. Femslash and het fic has this problem too, but not nearly to the same extent, at least not in the fandom circles I hang around.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)Hahahaha... seriously?
As long as there's been fic there's been people who don't give a shit about characterization. That's not a ~kids these days~ thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)and you're delusional if you think the migratory slash fandom hasn't had a major impact the quality of writing in slash fandom as a whole. slash was never a bastion of in-character writing, but it wasn't always this bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)What is the 'migratory slash fandom'?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 01:03 am (UTC)(link)They tend to look for pairings or characters that are superficially similar to each other in some way, and then write them as though the characters are interchangeable. A Migratory Slash Fan will rake A/B from fandom X, C/D from fandom Y, and E/F from fandom Z, and completely disregard those characters' individual personalities and relationship dynamics in favour of turning all the ships into Bland Stereotype A/Bland Stereotype B.
Migratory Slash Fen also love AUs, not because they like to explore what the characters might be like in a different setting, but because AUs make it easier for them to shove the characters deeper into the bland, generic, cookie cutter Diet Seme'n'Uke boxes. That's why they ESPECIALLY love mundane AUs (barista AUs, bakery AUs, flower shop AUs, etc.) and AUs where specific sexual roles are enforced on everyone (A/B/O AU, D/s AU, and the like).
Fandoms overrun by the Migratory Slash Fandom include: Supernatural, Teen Wolf, BBC Sherlock, Glee, Hannibal, Merlin, MCU, XMFC, and reboot!Trek.
As you can see, this subset of fandom is mainly attracted to live-action fandoms where the main characters are mostly white dudes.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)And some of us still do, and put a good deal of work into our plots and characterisations, thanks very much. Personally I and mine despise fluff and PWP. Your generalisations are just that - generalisations.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 02:07 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure about how far back we are going with this.
I started back in 2002 in the Yu Yu Hakusho and Gundam Wing fandoms. The former full of ooc fluff fic where Hiei and Kurama kiss at the end. The latter following Sturgeon's law to a T.
I will say that current fic is more about the pornz than when I started but fic containing "gay but not really gay" is thankfully fading.
Plotty fic is still a thing. The Hunger Games and Inception fandoms have created amazing backstories for their characters. Sherlock fandom has AUs that blow my mind sometimes. Hannibal fandom has done interesting things with the source material. Worldbuilding Star Trek fic ftw. Harry Potter fandom is still looking into the wizarding world as much as ever. Avengers fandom can be very thoughtful. Designations Congruent with Things and From the Ocean Risen continue to blow my socks off.
There is just more fanfic being written then ever, so while there is more average/bad fic, there is also more amazing fic.

Obviously you must only hang out in slash circles. It's the same shit with every shipping configuration, you just don't give a fuck if it's not slash. Bad writing is just bad writing. Alternatively, you could also just be a snob. Not everything is the fault of these kids today sucking.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 06:09 am (UTC)(link)That's what killed plot, but I'd argue it hasn't killed characterization completely. Specially since, you know, OOC fics have always existed.
