Yet again, it seems no one here wants to touch the elephant in the room: That slash, or more specifically Migratory Slash Fandom (as one commenter put it) inevitably results in the trashing of female characters who are in the way of the slashy hawtness. Slash has become nothing more than another outlet for schoolyard bitch-clique personalities to trash women they have irrational grudges against.

NEVER trust people who have to put down female characters to validate their gay white boy ships.

Like so many things touched in this thread, this is another that slash fangirls don't actually do anymore. Now you have to go out of your way to remind everyone that you LOVE any female character who could be considered in the way of your ship. If you really don't like her, and give reasons that don't have anything to do with shipping, you have to write a novel and produce a feature length film based on your novel proving those are the real reasons you don't like her and not just excuses for "she's in the way."

that might be a thing in your paradise fandom, but women hate is still very much alive and well in mine and pretending it doesn't exist doesn't do any favors. and i have a little trouble swallowing that all the slash in your fandoms love the women in the way unconditionally. though pedalstooling ~flawless goddess~ female character to pretend you're oh so progressive does seem to be a trend.

(in summary: slash drools, gen 4 lyfe)

I have seen much more of the female character on a pedestal than the hate these days. Especially since fandom migrated to tumblr, people who hate on female characters in any capacity are burned at the stake. In newer fandoms it's not something that is ignored or encouraged as it was in the past.

Now it's these female characters who are worshipped and calling them the most important thing of a series, even in instances where their characters aren't that relevant. Also the trashing of male characters who even vaguely challenge said female character.

I wouldn't say that slash fans hating on female characters never happens anymore, but I've definitely had the same experience you have, where the prevailing attitude in fandom is that you're practically not allowed to dislike a female character. The moment you do you're - gasp - a misogynist! I'm a feminist, and frankly I find it more oppressive and "problematic" than the largely unchecked female-character!hate of old. People act like each individual female character is the ground on which feminism will be won or lost. If anyone hates this singular fictional creation for reasons that aren't immaculately unproblematic, they are The Reason Misogyny Still Thrives in Our Culture.

Of course, ideally we would find somewhere in the middle. No matter how much I wish a female character weren't in the story, I still don't enjoy seeing her character (that is to say, her personal character) assassinated in fanfic. You want her gone, fine, make her a villain or even kill her off. But must we make her a petty, sniveling, hysterical, manipulative, incompetent, psychotic bitch? Can't she be a competent villain? Can't she at least die bravely and/or nobly?

This phenomenon has decreased significantly in slash fandom in recent years. I still see it a lot with some hardcore het ships though.

Clearly you've never seen Marvel fandom and what the Steve/Tony shippers do to Pepper, Peggy, or anyone else who gets in the way of their One Twoo Luv Stony. *roll eyes*

I see just as much woman-hate if not more hate directed at whatever 'trashy bitch' gets In The Way of het pairing. Sheesh, wasn't there just a thread within the last couple days about how Sleepy Hollow fandom wanted to burn some female character at the stake for throwing a wrench in their het ship?

I don't think this is a Slash Thing, so much as a Fan Thing.

I think since female character hate in slash fandoms was heavily called out and now people are aware that is a problem and newer fandoms do not tolerate it at all.

However, in het fandoms people have just ignored it and it still continues strongly to this day.

And of course no one is going to mention how male characters are hated when they get in the way of a femslash ship. Hibike Euphonium for a recent example. But nobody called them out of course because, as usual, only slash fangirls are capable of shitty behavior.
