I guess it's a fandom by fandom case? I believe you, but I haven't experienced that myself.

I HAVE seen some of them go on about how they love female characters more and that makes them more progressive, but I didn't really connect that with shipping.

In the end I think how 'progressive' a fan is definitely can't be determined simply by whether they lean toward slash, het, or femslash though. Even with femslash, which is both queer and about women (so girls aren't being ignored like they often are in slash and even het), you still see some gross shit.

I saw one post where someone was insisting that Korra and Mako was a more progressive pairing and better for gay rights than Korra/Asami because it didn't fall into butch lesbian/femme lesbian stereotypes, instead it gave us role reversal with a butch woman and a femme guy and that was so much better.

I raise my eyebrow at anyone who thinks that Korra/Asami are butch/femme.

Yeah, Korra may be a tomboy but she's not butch. She's just not as feminine as Asami.

Of course Asami is a gearhead which also pulls a kink in the butch/femme analysis.

Oh yeah I actually do remember that. The Makorra fans are pretty infamous for that, aren't they? I mean the whole Handmaiden and Feudal Lord thing, 'nuff said.
