What confuses me is how BBC Sherlock(-only) fans even get into arguments over ACD Sherlock. Like why does that happen?

Because they assume that Sherlock's creators are as faithfully reproducing canon Holmes for a modern audience as they say they are. Without going to source, they have no idea how way off that is, and assume when they come across ACD fans that they are on common ground.
