Re: Great Article on Daesh

I like that article a lot. It really helped me yesterday. I'm in Europe, and I was so shaken up by these horrible attacks, and reading a long explanation on how ISIS/Daesh operates and what they believe in weirdly helped me find my footing again. Understanding more about the situation didn't make the events any less atrocious, but it made me feel less disoriented and scared. Again, weirdly, since ISIS is scary and this is a scary article.

Like...it is really easy to think of people who do something like that as "monsters" and "pure evil" (and that was my first reaction), but it's useful to remember that they are indeed people, and that they are people who for some reason or other have become convinced that what they're doing is right, and just, and needs to be done. Which is even scarier in a way, but at least it's something recognizable, something that has happened many times before. I abhor everything that ISIS stands for, but reading that article I could understand how people may get seduced by all that apocalyptic rhetoric and that whole thing about shaping the word anew and all that.

It's still frightening, because extremists are fucking frightening, and it's also frightening to think that there are no clear solutions for this, but it made it all more tangible for me. I don't know, it helped.

I think the vilest things that people do are part of the range of human behaviors, but just because they're "human" and "believe that what they're doing is right" doesn't make them not evil. People can give themselves over to evil and the longer they do it, the more they crush their own humanity out of themselves. Eventually "monsters" is exactly what they are.
