I just can't stand LPers who have to put the video of themselves playing on screen because I'm not there to see their facial expressions, I'm there to see gameplay because I'm usually too scared to play the games myself and I'm broke and don't like dying. I like seeing the game as if I'm watching a friend or something play. Also seems kinda narcissistic.

Well it works for some of his stuff cause he plays a lot of horror, and watching his reactions is half the fun.

I don't watch too many of his vids, but when I do I love watching him freak out.

I can get enough sense of a reaction with plain ol' offscreen commentary, I don't need to see them react because it loses all sense of immersion to me.

DA

The debate about to face cam or not to face game is almost as old as LPing.

I generally prefer no face cam, but some game/LPer combinations really work for me. I had a lovely time with a lady playing P.E. who really engaged chat.

One recent example that didn't work that made me laugh was someone was streaming Fran Bow on twitch and kept having to move their reaction box all over the screen to avoid blocking text.

Ah, I tend to only watch LP's on YouTube and at this point, I only watch one person's videos and he has a pretty small fanbase. The only person I've watched on Twitch is my friend since she wanted to show me Fallout 4 and she only has me and another friend of her's watching.

I don't watch a ton of Let's Plays, but I get the appeal of both.

There are certain games I wouldn't or can't play myself so I don't want commentary or to stare at someone's face then.

However, if I've already played a game or watched another let's play of the title, I might be interested in seeing other people's thoughts and reactions. (The Last of Us especially, I've watched probably five Let's Plays of. Not the entire thing, but select parts.)

If I'm going to listen to commentary I would actually rather see the person speaking.

I don't mind commentary at all, but I'm there to watch the gameplay and having the LPer on screen is completely distracting and since it obstructs part of the screen, depending on where it is, it covers important parts of the screen or even part of the bg and it loses any sense of immersion I would have with the game.

Ah. See, I get that, especially if you're watching that let's play as the introduction to the title! If I'm already well aware of what's going on then I don't mind part of the screen being covered.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2015-11-17 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, well the latest one the LPer I like is doing I already saw elsewhere since I was impatient and wanted to see the last game in the series that was made (Fatal Frame in this case) and he's finally doing it, so I'm just watching him play partially for his reactions and partially because I really liked the game, but still, I value immersion and he's a familiar voice.

Sucks to be you, anon.

Many let's players add face cam because viewers keep asking them to.

You should pay attention when you post, I actually have a name here.

And no it doesn't, there's still plenty who don't show their faces, one which I watch regularly.

Also way to come off as a dick.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little shit? Ill have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and Ive been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and Im the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. Youre fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and thats just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little clever comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldnt, you didnt, and now youre paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. Youre fucking dead, kiddo.

Huh, I don't watch a lot of LPs, but I always felt like it's better to see the gamer's face to get a sense of being there with them, like hanging out with a friend.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2015-11-17 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well considering the angle most LPers film themselves, it doesn't seem like it would feel like hanging out with a friend, since people would be looking at the screen and not each other. Plus my friend's head doesn't block the screen.
