I think that's less to do with older people being uncool or unattractive, and more to do with many artists that grew up on anime and cartoon sameface not knowing how to draw people that look convincingly over 35.

Plus young(er) fans loving HS AUs, college AUs, coffee shop AUs, on and on, because they want to see the characters in situations they can relate with, and all the situations they can relate with are ones someone in their twenties would know.

Combined with the above point, you rarely see AU where the characters are aged older... and I can't think of any artists I know of that I'd be sure would even be able to draw one.

SA

*older as in adults into middle age, not children into young adults

That's also kind of comics and animation as an industry all together, even when an artist knows how to draw older characters they are often told not to.

Like unless you're drawing a side character or someone's parent it's very rare to get hired to draw anyone who shows visible age. I've even gotten told to remove things like wrinkles from drawings before.

That's messed up :(

It seems like such a relavely new thing because If you look at older cartoons, most characters were stately 40 somethings. I think I read something about it on TVtropes how animation turned into a genre for children, and then for some reason they decided to make younger and cuter characters...Perhaps inspired by anime(shakes fist at Japan)... I wish l could find the link :p
