I think that's less to do with older people being uncool or unattractive, and more to do with many artists that grew up on anime and cartoon sameface not knowing how to draw people that look convincingly over 35.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-17 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus young(er) fans loving HS AUs, college AUs, coffee shop AUs, on and on, because they want to see the characters in situations they can relate with, and all the situations they can relate with are ones someone in their twenties would know.

Combined with the above point, you rarely see AU where the characters are aged older... and I can't think of any artists I know of that I'd be sure would even be able to draw one.

That's also kind of comics and animation as an industry all together, even when an artist knows how to draw older characters they are often told not to.

Like unless you're drawing a side character or someone's parent it's very rare to get hired to draw anyone who shows visible age. I've even gotten told to remove things like wrinkles from drawings before.

Can't help you with the fandom portion, but why are you afraid of growing older? Growing older is going to be awesome! We'll be further along in our careers, we'll have more money, politicians will cater to us because we'll be the demographic that provides votes...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
not OP but
I'm scared of getting sick.
I'm scared of oblivion (can't be avoided so i try not to think about it too much)
I'm scared of my SO no longer finding me attractive.

I hate getting older. I have all of the disadvantages and none of the perks. I'd trade all this shit for being 18 again.

I'm just looking forward to having my student loans paid off.

In a random anecdote: I was at a work happy hour about a year ago, with 3 other people my age (30s), and a flock of research assistants (20s). One of the RAs basically ended up at "the old people table" where we were talking about a recent change to the 401k policy, and then refinancing mortgages because interest rates had dropped significantly from when one person bought her condo. And the poor RA was just sitting there with this look of absolute horror, like "seriously, this is the future?" And extra sad, because we were the cool single senior researchers who didn't have to rush home to their babies.

Also, my mom was all about turning 50 so she could join AARP and get discounts.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
That insight comes with age. No rush, but nothing to be afraid of either. Do consider the alternative.

I kinda get what you mean. It's incredibly annoying that so many people seem to think that a person's relevance and attractiveness come to a crashing end as soon as they pass 25 or 30 years old. It's a symptom of being in fandom, I guess---a lot of fandoms tend to skew to the teenage, at least in many online fandom areas. Tumblr for sure, which is where I usually go to find my fanart.

Yeah, I don't get that thinking, either. I'm in my early 30s, and sure, I might joke like, "Oh, that was twenty years ago already? Dang, I'm old!" but honestly, yeah, early 30s still leaves SO much possibility and future to look forward to, and mid 20s even more so. Especially considering how far life expectancy is going nowadays. It's not exactly like we're near death at these ages or anything.

25 is old?!?

I think that has a lot to do with the age of the bulk of fanartists skewing young.

What fandom is this?

I'm 37 and turning that age freaked me OUT...exponentially more than any previous age. Because, like, how can I possibly be that old?! I'm so young!!

Honestly, I don't get it both because if you draw a character to look 20 years younger that isn't the character I know, and also because if I'm attracted to them, I'm attracted to their current self. I don't need you to take a couple decades off the actor or actresses appearance for them to be appealing; I already find them to be.

Not that everyone is going to feel that way because taste varies quite a bit, and sometimes people will write AU's that de-age the characters for whatever reason, but I'm not all that interested in those. Lots of people are, though. *shrugs*

This reminds me of that secret we had of John from BBC Sherlock. (I'm remembering that one correctly, right? He had no wrinkles.)

Also, this movie was pretty amazing and surprisingly poignant but it fucked me up, man. Ugh. (Are people in THAT fandom making Pegg look like a teen? That defeats the purpose of the film...)

Validation, then, OP. I'm in my 50s, still rocking aling, enjoying myself far more now than I did in my 20s or 30s (40s was awesome), and wouldn't trade any of my earned wisdom, peace, and happiness for any younger age. I enjoy my fandom life and the ability to tell the naysayers to fuck off. It's very freeing, being old enough that people can't get away with telling me that fandom is a phase I'll get over. Getting older is just another adventure for me.

My particular pairings/fandom interests have always, for the most part, been older (over 35) characters. AND I always thought they were hot. And since these were not animated fandom either, there's only so much to make someone look younger, and they never really attempted to do so.

Perhaps look into different fandoms?

But really, while the luster of youth is beautiful, but there is also a beauty in growing older, and an attractiveness about certain people as well, that society (in many places) does not tend to value.

I hope as you do grow older, you're able to overcome that fear. I'm young. And I kind of get those feelings, from time to time, at least looking back on how fun I was. But yeah. Good luck OP. Know there are people out there that find older people attractive.

Try and treat grey hairs as a joke. I did and I'm still fine with them, in fact I find it more amusing now they're a bit more common and I can find them easier.

The older Barbara Hambly gets, the older her main characters get...which I like better and better the older I get. I think Jenny Waynest, John Aversin (although he's about 8 years younger than Jenny) and Benjamin January (of the Free Man of Color series of historical mysteries) are all in their middle 30s if not older.

I'm scared of growing old because of the ageism in our society.

Otherwise, I'd adore it. I've always loved surrounding myself with older people, my best friend is my Sociology teacher and I read what he reads, all the classics, all the pop fiction of the 60's, 70s and 80's but it just really hurts me how nobody but me values those things, the older actors and authors and just... If someone like an old Holywood actor comes to my city, I'm the first one in line, crying crocodile tears.

It just really upsets me how amazing, educated, refined people get none of the respect and admiration they deserve and how even they themselves break under society's pressure and begin to fall for this desire to forever stay young :(
