Can't help you with the fandom portion, but why are you afraid of growing older? Growing older is going to be awesome! We'll be further along in our careers, we'll have more money, politicians will cater to us because we'll be the demographic that provides votes...

not OP but
I'm scared of getting sick.
I'm scared of oblivion (can't be avoided so i try not to think about it too much)
I'm scared of my SO no longer finding me attractive.

Eat smart and exercise to ward off illness. This will also keep you in shape so you will continue to be a hot tamale. And if your SO does fall out of love with you, then you are better off without them.

Personally, I believe in an afterlife so that's not an issue for me. However, if you believe in oblivion, why fear what will happen anyway?

Easy thing to say, but every human has a deep irrational fear of the void. It's why we strive.

(anon you are responding to)
I am trying to eat smart and work out! i wish i believed in an afterlife, i keep trying but i don't feel any belief, which makes me pretty sad.

Then try imagining oblivion as sleep. I find the idea of a dreamless sleep more reassuring.

That's what I do, too. I don't even want an afterlife, I simply want to finally get some rest.

I do believe in an afterlife, but it also comes with a damnation. Luckily my church's brand of damnation is oblivion. It's a better concept IMO than eternal torture.

I believe in an afterlife, but I don't want it. I always thought, if God wants to give me peace, he'll lest me rest.

I'd like to think we'll get rest, whichever way we end up.

OP

Sorry I'm on mobile and replied to your question but not directly argh

But I just wanted to say that I really like your attitude and positive vibe and the 'hot tamale' bit cracked me up!!

I hate getting older. I have all of the disadvantages and none of the perks. I'd trade all this shit for being 18 again.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. But it's inevitable.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
God, I wouldn't. I'd go back as far as 30 but definitely no younger.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda bitter how everyone misses their teens when I shudder remembering mine.

My teens were utterly dreadful. I'm not even kidding. But at least socially, at 18, you're in a position to mke so many new decisions, like if/what you want to study etc.

If I'd go back to when I was happiest, I'd either have to go back to my early childhood (but then there would be my teens to redo), or to about 21-23. But if I'd be de-aged I'd want the longest possible head start that wouldn't involve losing my rights as an adult.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't. What an awful thought.

54 now.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm further away from 54 than from 18...maybe I'll feel different b then, too.

It doesn't help I can't stand most of my peers currently. Well that sounds harsh, they're perfectly fine human beings, I just have nothing in common with them and don't necessarily want to interact with them socially, because it's just frustrating on both ends.

Obviously there are exceptions, but I has a much easier time socializing at 21.

Oops that was me, got logged out.

I'm just looking forward to having my student loans paid off.

In a random anecdote: I was at a work happy hour about a year ago, with 3 other people my age (30s), and a flock of research assistants (20s). One of the RAs basically ended up at "the old people table" where we were talking about a recent change to the 401k policy, and then refinancing mortgages because interest rates had dropped significantly from when one person bought her condo. And the poor RA was just sitting there with this look of absolute horror, like "seriously, this is the future?" And extra sad, because we were the cool single senior researchers who didn't have to rush home to their babies.

Also, my mom was all about turning 50 so she could join AARP and get discounts.
