I'm not denying there's visually really beautiful manga, but personally I find the range of art styles bigger in comics, and when people are drawn well it can be almost like a painting. But I guess I like more realism in that sense.
Also the amount of pulp in manga is staggering. I mean yes some stand out, but that definitely not a the case for a random manga you pick up.

You're right about the range of art style being bigger. There are lots of comics that are visually interesting and amazing, but I wouldn't call them pretty, whereas many mangas have more uniformity to them, at least the less stand-out stuff.
To me, realism is realism - it can be a beautiful panting, but not really "pretty" the way I think OP is using it.
