I think there's a scale. In general, many graphic novels these days have better quality art, imo, but the really pretty mangas are absolutely beautiful. Even when series are technically incredibly drawn, though, I have noticed a tendency that the art will be less "pretty", though.

That's true, but manga is suuuuper guilty of using "same face" and making all the characters look the same expect for diffrent hair and eye colors. GN do this too sometimes, but I see it happening way more with manga. If the art is good enough though, like in Fruits Basket, I tend to forgive it.

It's way worse in GNs though. Every time I read a western comic book I feel like I have faceblindedness because every character looks exactly the same.

You know, people keep praising the art of Fruits Basket and I don't get it. I'm actually reading it right now, and... the art is not amazing? The characters have total sameface, and there's a lot of issues with proportion.
It's not bad, but it's hardly what I would call stunning, and I would not rate it among top shoujo.

Maybe it was pretty for its time? Nostalgia? idk either

Fruits Basket has a specific aesthetic that appeals to people who like clean, simplistic, almost child-like art. I happen to love it (well, the latter half or 3/5; the art wasn't that great when the series started) because I like that particular aesthetic, but it's definitely not something that would appeal to everyone. People who, for example, prefer a more adult-looking set of characters, or who like their comic art to have a more complex general design, would find it boring, I expect.

I mostly like it because of how detailed the backgrounds are.
I own almost every volume in the series, and whenever I reread it I always notice something new.

Sure, but I guess that's how you define pretty, too, I guess? If you mean more ethereal, fantasy-like, then yes you have a point.

I'm not denying there's visually really beautiful manga, but personally I find the range of art styles bigger in comics, and when people are drawn well it can be almost like a painting. But I guess I like more realism in that sense.

Also the amount of pulp in manga is staggering. I mean yes some stand out, but that definitely not a the case for a random manga you pick up.

Sturgeon's Law, though. The amount of manga in general is staggering. You go into stores in Japan and just... there's so freaking much of it. It's insane.

You're right about the range of art style being bigger. There are lots of comics that are visually interesting and amazing, but I wouldn't call them pretty, whereas many mangas have more uniformity to them, at least the less stand-out stuff.

To me, realism is realism - it can be a beautiful panting, but not really "pretty" the way I think OP is using it.

Right, which just means it's totally a case of different case.

And yeah the Sturgeon's Law makes sense.
