Ugh yes.

The governor of my current state has said we will not take refugees, which annoys me. The governor of my former state has said that they will. So, of course, some of my friends who still live there were posting about it yesterday and being like, "WTF this is terrible, what a moron, I hate him, we have our own problems so why are we helping them."

C'mon, guys. These are people trying to escape a warzone, people whose lives have been torn apart, and nobody wants them. Nobody wanted them before this happened. And you're basically saying you'd rather they stay there and die than for you to be mildly inconvenienced (and you probably won't be. You probably won't notice any difference). Half of them have the French flag overlay on their profile pictures, as well, and all I could think was, "if they were French refugees, would your tune change? Or would you say the same things while patting yourselves on the back for temporarily changing an icon on the internet?"

...yeah, I have feelings.

Seriously. If these people complaining were in that sort of situation, wouldn't they want someone to help them? Apparently putting oneself in someone else's place for a moment really IS hard for some people to do.

I don't know what our governor's said about the idea of refugees coming here yet-may have to look that up and see, 'cause now I'm curious.

SA

Okay, just looked-yeah, he wants to halt efforts. He thinks there should be a "federal review" first, but he doesn't sound very keen on letting them in at all even with that.

Not even remotely surprised, I gotta say :/.

Gah. What exactly would that federal review entail, beyond what's already done to check refugee/immigrant backgrounds?

Exactly. I honestly don't know what extra measures he thinks we'd need to take.

But he's an idiot in general anyway, so...yeah.
