Re: The world post Paris
I'm also kind of laughing at the US governers insisting that their states won't take refugees as if they get a say. This is one of those times where the fact that the feds get to do what they want on immigration actually is a good thing.
But mostly I'm just mad. And especially at the "just take Christians refugees" comments and the "Take only families, not single men" comments as if only Christians and only families are suffering persecution.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:57 am (UTC)(link)(Not to mention, if these terrorists are pretending to be refugees, then they could just as easily pretend to be Christians or falsely claim to have a family, too, if they knew that was a way for them to sneak in without scrutiny.)
Re: The world post Paris
The governor of my current state has said we will not take refugees, which annoys me. The governor of my former state has said that they will. So, of course, some of my friends who still live there were posting about it yesterday and being like, "WTF this is terrible, what a moron, I hate him, we have our own problems so why are we helping them."
C'mon, guys. These are people trying to escape a warzone, people whose lives have been torn apart, and nobody wants them. Nobody wanted them before this happened. And you're basically saying you'd rather they stay there and die than for you to be mildly inconvenienced (and you probably won't be. You probably won't notice any difference). Half of them have the French flag overlay on their profile pictures, as well, and all I could think was, "if they were French refugees, would your tune change? Or would you say the same things while patting yourselves on the back for temporarily changing an icon on the internet?"
...yeah, I have feelings.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)Seriously. If these people complaining were in that sort of situation, wouldn't they want someone to help them? Apparently putting oneself in someone else's place for a moment really IS hard for some people to do.
I don't know what our governor's said about the idea of refugees coming here yet-may have to look that up and see, 'cause now I'm curious.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)Okay, just looked-yeah, he wants to halt efforts. He thinks there should be a "federal review" first, but he doesn't sound very keen on letting them in at all even with that.
Not even remotely surprised, I gotta say :/.

Ours (Maryland) is one of them "for the sake of the Maryland people." I want to write him a letter saying that he does not represent the Maryland people in thinking that, but sadly I'm not sure that's true...
Re: The world post Paris
I wouldn't put it past some of these states to actually try something, though. Arizona for one has already tried to make so many anti-immigrant state laws, most of which have thankfully been found unconstitutional. But they keep trying.
Re: The world post Paris
(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 03:45 am (UTC)(link)Mmhm. Especially considering how resistant some states have been to implement anything the Obama administration's tried to put forward in the past. They'll find some way to blame him for this somehow, if they haven't started already. *Rolls eyes*
