It is used quite liberally now. I just call myself an otaku, being japanese and all. I knew a guy who was way too into the japanese culture stuff, but couldn't stay there due to his visa expiring. Asshole started speaking to me in Japanese for no reason even though we are both american and he knew me from high school.
