Has anyone else ever acknowledged one bit of author stated canon, but ignored another? I had an idea about a fic involving Umbridge's squib brother, but fudged her canon age a bit to make it work how I planned it, and I feel kinda bad for cherry-picking canon.

Nah go for it, fuck canon anyway

It's not like Umbridge being older changes anything, to be honest. I actually imagined her as being much older before I found out. I imagined her as this evil old grandma lady.

Oh for sure. As a general rule, I don't consider Word of God canon - to me, canon is only the narrative as it already exists and nothing changes that.

But hey, if Word of God supports my own theories and opinions, then I'm happy to accept it. Who cares if it's cherry-picking, unless you are writing your master's thesis on the subject or something.

That makes sense.

It's really such a small thing that changes practically nothing. I always thought she was older anyway.

pick and choose what you want. that's practically what fanfic's made of anyway.

I can't believe I forgot that.

All the time, most people do.

I've noticed that age gets some leeway in fanfiction, especially if it's ambiguous or outright not stated in canon.

I read that as squid brother

Your idea is cool too

But now I kinda want her to have a squid brother
